Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - THE FIRST FEMINIST...
In this, the fifth volume in her Queens of England series of novels, the author, also known as Victoria Holt to her legion of fans, tackles the story of Eleanor of Aquitaine, a woman who led an incomparable life. Born in an age when women tended to be submissive and docile, Eleanor was anything but. She was an outspoken, well-educated, independent, and beautiful woman. Hers is a story that, in the hands this author, an accomplished storyteller, captivates the reader.

Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine, became Queen of France when she entered into a marriage of state with Louis VII of France, a somewhat weak and ineffectual, though pious, young ruler. Theirs was not a passionate affair of the heart but, rather, a misalliance that would ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Historical Fiction at its best.
Eleanor of Aquitaine is without doubt one of the most fascinating characters in history and Jean Plaidy brings her to life with characteristic flair and believability. Her ambition, passion and ruthlessness leap off the page and the events of her life are vividly described and brought into a personal context.

Although Jean Plaidy's writing is classed as historical fiction my mother was told to read her novels as a back up to bring the history she studied at A level to life. Although most of the detail in terms of personal events and emotions which bring the characters to life is based on supposition on the part of the writer the larger historical facts are well researched and for the most part, accurate.
