Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - historcial novel writing as it should be - simply superb!!
I had read this fantasic novel some years ago and recently I read it again. I am actually not very often inclinded to re-read books but here I was - like some years ago - absolutely hooked and could not put it down. This is historcial novel writing as it should be. "The Reckoning folows Penman's inititial success "The Sunne in Splendour" and is writing with the same knowledge, passion and superb style of writing. Since her first novel she has never disappointed her readers.. The novel re-awakens medieval Wales and England and a long lost time for today's reader. Simply superb!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I love this book!
This was the first Sharon Penman book I read (I know, I started in the wrong place!) and remains one of my favourites. Her characterisation is excellent, as is her description of Medieval Welsh and Anglo-Norman life. She is almost always historically accurate, and although her books are touched with an element of romantic fiction it is not overpowering. Be prepared for a tear-jerker, mind you, the story of Ellen de Montfort and Llewelyn ap Gruffydd is not happy for very long.
Anyone new to Penman should really read 'Here Be Dragons' and 'Falls the Shadow' first, as they are the first two parts of this trilogy, and everything makes more sense. However, it is possible to read it as a stand-alone novel, as I did at first, and still enjoy ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - OUTSTANDING!
What a great book. Along with an engrossing story I learned much about English history that I had never heard of before. I have to admit, some of the things that came up during the courtship/marriage of Llewellen and Ellen seemed absolutely bizarre, and then I searched the internet on these characters and they did actually happen. Edward I was and is an absolute two timing double faced snake in the grass!!

I won't give it away, but a scene at the end of the book was so heartbreaking I literally cried for about 10-15 minutes. I can't recall any other book affecting me so. This was an awesome series, Here by Dragons, Falls the Shadow and the Reckoning.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Extraordinary Historic Fiction By The Genre's Master Writer!
"The Reckoning" is the last novel in Sharon Kay Penman's medieval trilogy of 13th century England, Wales and their larger than life leaders. Ms. Penman succeeds brilliantly in bringing these men and women, and the causes they fought for, to life in these books. Her impeccable historical research, attention to detail and superb storytelling ability make her novels consistently excellent. "The Reckoning" is one of her best efforts, preceded by "Here Be Dragons," and "Falls The Shadow." Each of these wonderful historical novels stands on its own, however, and while it is an extraordinary experience to read each book in the order it was written, one does not have to do so to appreciate the history, the characters, or the period.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Well written and tear-jerking
"The Reckoning" is the final part of the trilogy that began with "Here Be Dragons" and "Falls the Shadow" and it is a worthy continutation of those titles. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd is now a man, with his sights set first on obtaining Gwynedd, and then on creating a united Wales strong enough to resist the encroachments of the English kings. But his dream suffers setbacks from the English king, and from other Welsh princes, jealous of his power, one of whom is his own brother...

Sharon Penman writes very well, she is the greatest writer of medieval historical fiction writing today. The characterization is fantastic and believable and it is obvious that this book is well researched. For people interested in the period I recommend "Llywelyn ... Read More:
