Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - not Eliot's best...
... but still a good read. The scenes set in Florence are interesting and the hero/heroine start out well, though she fails the hold our interest. For a similar situation examining the effects of unequal marriages on both men and women read Eliot's Middlemarch instead, which really is her masterpiece.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - George Eliot, Romola, Penguin Classics, Ed.Dorothea Barrett
Summary: An unfairly under-read classic - Eliot at her brilliant best on the subtle destruction of a marriage.

Many start and never finish it and British universities seem only too willing to consign it to the dusty recesses of literary didn't-quite-make-its. Indeed, if there is such a thing as a popular perception of Romola, or indeed of Eliot's state of mind as she was writing it, it is of the great Victorian sage forgetting to smile: being at her most worthy, her most didactic while presenting neither the sparkling repartee of a Mrs Poyser, girlish malefactions of a Hetty Sorrel nor indeed the dynamic introspections of a Dorothea Brooke. And yet this seems ... Read More:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Florence, 15th century, The Medicis, Savonarola, Machiavelli
Romola was going to be one of the best books I have read. I love historic fiction and I had enjoyed George Eliot's other books. I knew that Eliot had spent years in preparation for Romola and I knew that she thought it was her best work. I trusted Eliot's opinion of her own book and I believed that good books required good research. So, nothing could go wrong, I was going to love this book no matter what. I bought it but did not read it right away. Since we had an upcoming Florence trip, I waited until I saw the city of Romola. As soon as we returned back from Florence, much enamoured by it, I started the book with great enthusiasm. As I read about the River Arno, Ponte Vecchio, the Campanile and the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria, ... Read More:
