- Enjoyable but not perfect
I picked up this book as I really enjoy British history of this period (lots of scandal, lots of excitement and plenty of intrigue) and I'd been told that Sharon Penman really did her home work. Sure enough it started well. The pacing was a bit jerky (IMO). This was probably more to do with having to cover so many people over so many years than anything else but by half way through I really didn't care about any of the characters. Still, it was pretty enjoyable until I started spotting real school boy errors such as referring to 'Thomas a Becket'? Not that old chestnut. His contemporaries (such a Roger of Hoveden who chronicled the 'Disputes' between Henry II and Thomas) wrote of him as Thomas Becket and most reputable historians agree ... Read More:

- I loved this book
I`m welsh so I suppose I`m biased but this is one of my all time favourites! Having gone to a welsh school I learnt a lot about welsh history - I wish my teacher had told me about Sharon Penman! I became a recluse and virtually ignored my family until I finished this book. A brilliant book!

Even if you have no previous interest in or even knowledge of Welsh history in the 13th Century you can't fail to enjoy this book. This is the first of Penman's Welsh/Norman trilogy and it's main protagonists are John, King of England, his illegitimate daughter Joanna, and her husband Llewelyn ab Iorwerth, later known as Llewelyn Fawr. The reader will be swiftly caught up in the lives of these extraordinary people, and the events that form their lives. The story of Llewelyn and Joanna is a tale of incredible love, strong enough even to forgive adultery. Llewelyn was around eighteen years Joanna's senior, and she was only fourteen when they married (not unusual for the period), yet the reader can see that they were truly in love. For many ... - Loved it!
What a fascinating and interesting book! I loved it from the first word until the last and it is one of those books that you learn from as well. This is an added bonus to reading such an enthralling story about Llewelyn and his wife Joanna, King John's daughter. You learn a lot about the Welsh Prince and the deeds of King John.

This book comes highly recommended - everyone I know who has read it loves it!

- One of the best books I have ever read!
This was awesome! First of three in a series about Wales and England in the 13th Century. Evil King John, the honorable Prince of Wales, Llwellan (sp?). The love story between llwellan and Joanna was very touching, especially at the end when he forgave her. They are also in the first part of Falls the Shadow in another heartbreaking scene. Highly recommended.
