Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A bad laugh?
This book must be one of the worst I've read. I variously laughed out loud (the Niagara Falls escape); groaned at the improbabilities (he drives 100 miles in a truck through the Central African jungle in 2 hours!); and went to sleep as yet again our untrained hero fights/kills professional mercenaries by the dozen, without ever eating or sleeping. And as for our heroine and the 'rescuing angel' character who arrives in a suit in the middle of Africa/Russia/USA at just the right moments, words fail me. Even reading this on a beach in mid-summer would be a waste of time. Come back M - all is forgiven!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Predictable action adventure story...
The story starts with a scientist becoming a victim of the Hindenburg disaster. Then our hero, mining engineer Philip Mercer, is in Central Africa and, among other things, stumbles upon a new love target who also works for the government - needless to say they join up against the forces of evil. Then ancient history is drawn upon, terrorist threats are introduced, an unknown order is revealed and countries from Egypt to Russia are brought into the picture. Du Brul ties all of these together to produce his adventure story.

But it all develops very predictably. There is non-stop action some of which is hard to swallow. There also seemed to me to be a lot of superfluous pages as Du Brul raved with too much detail - I suspect nothing ... Read More:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Predictable Action Thriller
What could be more exciting that a modern day search by wanna-be terrorists for a stash of old world plutoniumm? Caught my interest.

Havoc starts off with a twist, causing the reader to question what history has taught us about the Hindenburg disaster. From there we are led on a chase through Africa, Atlantic City, Niagara Falls, Russia, Turkey and back to Africa again as Mercer, our rugged, fearless hero along with Cali Stowe the independent, educated, undercover government operative follow the clues set down in an ancient monument telling of the exploits of Alexander the Great. With them is Harry, an elderly friend of Mercer's who loves to gamble and Booker Sykes, a Navy Seal-type of mercenary.

The action is quick. ... Read More:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - An Agatha Christie ending
I don't want to deride this book as in general I enjoy Mr Du Brul's adventures and always enjoy catching up with Mercer, Harry and Drag. But, well there had to be one I suppose, I feel that this one is not on par to any of his other books.

Why? Well the book gets off to a roaring start with some bloke on the Hindenburg and then catches up with Mercer in central Africa somewhere where he meets up with his latest "love" interest. The story then charges off at 100mph and somewhere, about 2/3 through grinds to a slow 5mph and ends with an "Agatha Christie" lazy ending, you know the one where it turns out that some long lost cousin from Peru did it and the first time we meet them is on page 99 of 100.

I had to suspend belief ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Soar to New Action Heights on Wings of Unlimited Imagination
Do you like a good yarn? Do you like something to happen during novels? Do you like the early Clive Cussler books about Dirk Pitt? Did you like the new novel, Skeleton Coast, by Clive Cussler and Jack DuBrul? If you answered "yes" to any two of those questions, you must read Havoc!

As the book opens, a desperate man clings to life as he tries to bring back an important secret on the dirigible Hindenburg. Before the dirigible is reduced to ashes, twisted metal, and hot gases, the secret is launched into the future. There to catch the scent of that secret is Philip Mercer, the Dirk Pitt of geologists in the service of the United States. The search for the secret begins in the middle of a bloody civil war in Africa, but soon extends into ... Read More:
