Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sashenka
A totally gripping book which I couldn't put down. Very disturbing in its content, which is based on fact, and therefore even more compelling. Beautifully written. An extremely powerful story.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sashenka
If you are in any doubt what to buy for any female friend or relative or if you are staring blankly at shelves in bookshops wondering what to read this Christmas, look no further.
Sashenka is a genuine historical novel but through it courses the most powerful, emotional story that leaves you emotionally exhausted from beginning to end. A Hollywood blockbuster for sure.
Whilst we berate the depths of doom and gloom upon us as the recession settles in for good, Sashenka expertly examines a period of almost unimagineable history through the life of this extraordinary woman - in the grander scheme of world history, the credit crunch is healthfully perspectivised...
Montefiore is masterful. A woman's man, he writes with such extraordinary ... Read More:

Sashenka
I couldnt put it down. This novel, set accross the 20th century Russia, tells the story of the flawed hero Sashenka. It was so real, the sense of history, the adventure, the intrigue, the tragedy, the love. Montefiore tells the story in such exquisite detail that it felt you were standing next to Sashenka the entire time. The story made me laugh, it made me cry. Thank goodness I was on a 9 hour flight when i read it. I dont know what i would have done if i had to put it down!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Inspiring Read
I have finished this book today, I deliberately held back from sitting down and reading it in one go so that I could hold on to the pleasure and excitement of the story.

As a novel based on fact it was at the top of its class, the reader is drawn into the story and becomes embroiled in the intrigue and sheer horror of the Stalin era. The main character is shown to be less than perfect herself, but this just makes her all the more human and someone with whom the reader can relate.

The book has inspired me to find out more about this terrible time in the history of Russia which is ultimately what a book should be able to do. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who loves sweeping historical novels based on facts.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Inspiring
I've never learnt about Russian history and found the story profoundly moving, informative, fascinating and heart-rendering all in one. I'm sure the term 'a page turner' is well over used so please excuse me for 'over using' it once more. I look forward to learning more about an extraordinary people, nation and history though I'm still staggered to learn of literally so many lost souls, lost parents, lost children - I had no idea I'm ashamed to say. In some ways I morn my ignorance of these horrors that so many suffered, its utterly harrowing and incomprehensible especially when you consider the numbers involved, each one an individual, a family, a story like the one brought to life in 'Sashenka' - pretty mind numbing stuff when trying to grasp the scale ...
