Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best yet?
I have to disagree with many of these reviews. I've read all Billingham's books [in the right order, which is important] and this is quite possibly the best yet. Not in the least bit slow, nor are the others - I really cannot believe that! He is one of the very few current crime writers whose form hasn't taken a nosedive. This one is highly recommended!

Death Message (Tom Thorne Novels)
Tortous slow read very ordinary ended up countig four letter words to the page!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - What's happened to Mark Billingham?
I loved MB's first two books - Sleepy Head and Scaredy Cat. Then I read The Burning Girl, which wasn't great, and skipped him for a while. Picked up Death Message to see if he'd returned to form, and was very disappointed. It was hard to care about the "victims" - rival bike gangs -and the whole mobile phone storyline seemed a bit outdated. The sarcasm of Tom Thorne just stopped being funny - I got the feeling the author was putting his own comments about things that annoyed him in there (like hating people saying 9/11). Go back to the earlier books for a good read!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Another good Tom Thorne novel
Billingham's series starring Tom Thorne is renowned for its dark, violent plots and Death Message certainly lives up to the earlier books in that sense. Thorne is party to communications from a killer wreaking havoc among a gang of bikers in London; adopting a daring, reckless tactic to get to the bottom of the case, Thorne is faced with perhaps the most difficult situation so far in the series as personal friendships and the case get entangled. Eventually, some resolution is reached, but not before more bloodshed and much mental anguish on Thorne's part.

This is an unusual book, in that the identity of the killer and his motive are made clear very early on (both to the reader and to Thorne and his colleagues); for the most part, ... Read More:

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - PC Plodder
I don't think DI Thorne is my favourite policeman these days. Maybe I just can't get into Mark Billingham's books. I read the earlier ones and found them to be slow going. This one is no different.

Certainly, the plot is intriguing and the police procedures are well up to scratch as far as the reader is concerned. Certainly, the book is well written, the dialogue entertaining and yet...

Some have likened Thorne to Rebus or Morse but he seems to lack the charisma of these two. I felt detached whereas with the other characters mentioned, one almost feels to be involved in what's taking place.

I'll probably read the next one but won't go back and catch up on the couple I appear to have missed.
