Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Well Exectuted Kitchen Sink Drama
I didn't read Helen Walsh's controversial debut (Brass), but this sophmore novel was interesting-looking enough to spark my interest. It grabbed me from the start, and despite its deficiencies, carried me through to the bitter end. As such, I find my self grappling with the question of whether I "liked" it or not. Basically, this is a classic British kitchen sink drama that is extremely well executed. That is to say, very early on bad things happen, and one gets the impression that bad things will keep on happening -- and that's pretty much how it plays out. The good news is that Walsh knows her setting and characters so well, that it feels quite real.

This may, in large part, be down to the semi-autobiographical nature of the ... Read More:

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - destined for remainder.......characterless
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............After reading Brass I expected to care about the characters in this second novel. I was very surprised to read these good reviews. I agree with the words mature and measured to describe a work of fact but this is a fiction and and found it so mature and measured could only get to within forty pages of the end. this is how little I cared for the Fitzgeralds to see how their lives would progress or otherwise. One can read Brass feeling that this writer experienced these events it was so well written. Once Upon a Time left me bored . I expected a book to be as well written as Brass, I thought if I stick with it something will wake me........... I've just ordered Tony Judt, History of Europe............for some ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Heartbreaking
I bought this book after hearing it being reviewed during Simon Mayo's book review programme on Five Live. It is a heartbreaking read and I utterly recommend it, it doesn't come close to anything I usually read and at one point I found it so depressing I nearly gave up, but it is worth persevering with it

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - powerful insights
What an interesting read. Initially I didn't want to read much beyond the beginning when I knew that something awful was going to happen. But I did and it does. And then it's just a downward slide to an almost inevitable end.
But the book is compelling; Helen Walsh writes with real insight into lives and I suspect not all of this is fiction. The book made me cry at the end; but I could never say I am sorry I read it. I think it's a wonderful book, well written and incredibly real.
Wish I could find an e-mail address for her to tell her how much I liked her writing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Completely drawn in
I'm not into chick lit, and I'm glad this is so much more.

I'm not ashamed to say the story drew me in so deeply that I wept at the end. This book taps into extremely deep and powerful emotions and you can't help but feel incredibly strongly for the Fitzgeralds.
