Editorial Review:

Book Description:
THE guide to Madeira for the last 18 years and a winner of the Thomas Cook Best Travel Guide Award. It really is indispensible if you want to explore the best of the island. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.' While dedicated hikers will revel in the island's mountainous terrain, walking the 'levada' paths is one of the most popular activities with visitors. Levadas are watercourses that carry rainfall from the mountains to irrigate the cultivated terraces. These watercourses and their adjoining maintenance paths extend for an incredible 2150km/1350mi or more, but even more fascinating is their great variety. The older levadas, built centuries ago, are narrow and plummet steeply downhill from mountainside springs really challenging walking. Their banks are covered with wild flowers, and the water rushes and fith energy. The newer levadas are wide 'mini-canals' and run horizontally along the island's contours ideal for easy walks. Their flow is stately and serene, and their banks are lovingly planted with agapanthus lilies and hydrangeas.Walking on Madeira is superb all year round.

6 car tours, 100 long and short walks, 27 picnic suggestions
Plan of Funchal plus fold-out touring map

Synopsis:
This pocket-sized full-colour guide is designed for short-break holidays on Madeira with a gastronomic touch. Even if you're not a walker, it's worth having just for the restaurant suggestions, the excursions and the information about local food. The book describes a couple of excursions for all-comers (including how to tour the island inexpensively by bus), plus 13 easy to moderate walks, all illustrated with 1:35,000 topographical maps. Each excursion or walk recommends at least one restaurant en route serving local cuisine, with photograph, price guide, opening times, sample menus, and recipes for some of their specialities.Other sections include: planning your trip, getting about, food shopping (including health foods and local markets), glossary of food terms and restaurant mini-vocabulary.A special feature is the emphasis on natural local foods suitable for those with food intolerances. All recipes have been made by the authors and are known to 'work'. On-line updates keep readers abreast of any route or restaurant changes. "Sunflower have led the field for years with their brilliant Landscapes walking and car touring guides.

Now, they have raised their game even higher with a superb new Walk & Eat series." (Frank Barrett, Mail on Sunday)

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Disappointing
There was not much new in this edition and I wished I had stuck with the previous version. It's misleading to call it 'new' when so much of the content is 'old'. It represented poor value in my opinion. Also, some of the walk descriptions are vague and not that easy to follow with great chunks of the routes not described at all.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - good for walkers, other look elsewhere
The walk descriptions are excellent but compared to other Landscapes books I was dissappointed by the Car tours and general lack of background. If you just want to know how to navigate the trails this is fine. If you want tourist/historic background etc and some places to visit then buy the Rough Guide book instead.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Do not go to Madeira without this book!
If you intend to sit in the hotel all day, you won't need it. But if you're going to Madeira to see the island and appreciate all aspects of its stunning landscapes, then you need to have this book.

The car tours are superior to those described in other guides, and will take you to places where there simply are no other tourists - places that no other guide book seems to even mention exist - as well as to the places that everyone goes to see.

The descriptions for both walks and car tours are so detailed that you can't get lost, every turn you make carefully described. There are detailed maps for every walk, plus careful assessments of how fit you need to be, the footwear you need and whether you need to have a head for ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Landscapes Of Madeira, by Pat and John Underwood.
I highly recommend "Landscapes of Madeira, by Pat and John Underwood" Sunflower books ISBN 1-85691-200-0.

The book has been written specifically for walking, picnics or short walks using your car, plus dedicated car tours, which guide you by road, to elite locations. All maps are included, car tours and walks are illustrated with colour pictures and detailed easy to follow instructions that "actually explain" how to get to your destination. Even bus timetables are provided. There are several bus companies offering coverage of the entire island. The guide provides a map showing where to get the busses in Funchal (see main town map page) and which colour bus you need to take you to your choice of destination (various bus companies ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Superb for walkers & drivers wishing to discover Madeira
This is a fantastic little guide that will help you discover every corner of the beautiful Madeira countryside and dramatic mountain and coastal scenery, often utilising the unique levada routes. Whether you are a once a year holiday walker, a serious hiker or touring by car, the book provides a wealth of options, backed up by excellent maps and sound safety and equipment advice. This book will take you to places that most guides haven't heard of - and give you the opportunity to feed your soul with the peace and harmony that only mother nature can provide. If your idea of a holiday is laying on a sunlounger all day or mixing with the hordes in a trashy resort and drinking all night -don't buy this book!
