Editorial Review:

The Sunday Times, Books of the Week, January 5, 2003:
...atmospheric black-and-white images add a distinctive touch of sophistication ...plenty of practical information and entertaining history

Synopsis:
The second edition of our popular mini guide to help you get the best out of Naples. Covering the city itself as well as popular excursions to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, Procida, the Amalfi coast, Paestum and Caserta. Stuck between the world's most famous volcano and the deep blue sea, Naples is a historic, anarchic and chaotic city offering the best pizza in Italy, a great spirit and a wealth of cultural opportunities. Check out the vespas, the volcano and the vibrant nightlife with this up to the minute companion to the city and its surroundings.

From the Author:
The extraordinary nature of Naples is hard to capture. The highest praise I've had about this book came from a Neapolitan, who said that it read as if it was written by a Neapolitan, and that she now uses it to decide where to go out in the city. I hope I've managed to give a taste of the place, as well as pointers to some excellent food, interesting shops, stirring music and extraordinarily unfrequented sights.

From the Back Cover:
Offers of pizza you can’t refuse. The best sights. Bars and clubs. One famous volcano. Ruins to die for. Festivals. Thermal spas. Where to eat, drink and sleep. Anarchic Vespas. Islands in the bay. Kids’ stuff. Liquefied saints and sanctified footballers…

Naples, stuck between the world’s most famous active volcano and the deep blue sea is beautiful and ugly in equal measure. It can be an intimidating place – anarchic and only sporadically law-abiding. The traffic is terrible and peace and quiet is hard to find. But it’s an extraordinarily vivacious and fascinating city, the food (especially pizza) is great, opera, classical music and jazz are ingrained into its culture and the treasure trove of sights the city hides away is at times overwhelming.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Extremely Useful
A very useful little book - packed with information that we were able to use during a short stay in Naples!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An excellent little guide, EXCEPT
It seems that many people are fearful of Naples' reputation for crime, squalor and chaos, and so use it as little more than a gateway for Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi coast. Big mistake! Naples is a wonderful city. It is chaotic, no doubt about that. But it is also energetic and easy-going and its medieval street plan is home to surprising architecture, social contrasts, radical politics and the world's best pizzas. You will enjoy it most if you are a lover of city life, as there is nothing suburban or bucolic there. But Naples is an adventure and this little guide will help you get straight into the heart of it.

Having used the Footprints guides for Bologna and Bilbao, we didn't hesitate to buy this one. As with those other guides, ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - New breed of guidebook
Well researched, great pocket format, a plethora of excellent tips for eating - too many in fact!

Only criticism would be the lack of a street index at the back so you can find addresses listed easily (cf TimeOut) instead of having to scour the map searching for obscure street names. A map & more detailed explanation of the slightly confusing transport system would also have been useful, but was perhaps excluded due to space constraints.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stunning, pocket sized guide
This guide book makes great reading before, during and after a trip to Naples. Detailed information on every aspect of this region of southern Italy and stunning photographs make you keen to get there and experience it all, and set it apart from other formulaic guides. Great ideas for days out plus hints and tips so you feel like you are doing things that not every tourist will be doing. I strongly recommend this book for any length of stay in Naples or just for interesting reading.
