Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - FORM IS TEMPORARY, CLASS IS FOREVER
I first heard this in a bar - where they played it non-stop for three months - in Holland back in 1981. I'd never heard of Brooker before, and thought Procol Harum very dull, but this album is so solid it sounds good - perhaps even still modern - twenty-odd years later.

Highlights are Pilot, the great anthem Savannah and the title track. Listen to this alongside Donald Fagen's Nightfly (or any of the classic Steely Dan) and the comparison will astound you. Under rated but a hidden gem, with George Martin putting a fine performance in at the desk to keep it the right side of lament and maudlin. Always could get a nice balanced sound out of a Fender Rhodes, could George....

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brooker flies alone!
Excellent first solo album from Brooker, which in its way releases Brooker from the contraints of Procol Harum.Superbly produced by George Martin whose string-arrangements blend well with Brookers' soulful voice particularly on the ballads "Say it ain't so Joe" and "Pilot"."Fear of flying" is the only track co-written by Procol lyricist Keith Reid and is an excellent up-tempo track worthy of its title status, though with a more cheerful sound than Procol. There are several cover versions most of which are well chosen and those that aren't do not detract from the overall high quality of the album. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great Brooker work
Fine, powerfull and different songs; with -luckely-a few 'encores'. Not at all Procol Harum, buth erea-bound. Brooker gets better every time I hear or see him:lately in Peer-Belgium,where he did some wonderfull Willie and the poor boy's stuff among AWSOP-solo- and Lead me to the wather.Keep them coming Gary.J.P.BELGIUM
