Actress Jennifer Lopez's debut album fails in its attempt to provide a worthy musical backdrop to her much-discussed diva-esque image. Over the course of 13 songs, On the 6 displays barely a glimmer of the verve, poise, and sensuality of her screen performances in the likes of Out of Sight. With little vocal talent to rely on, Lopez generally seems content to ape Madonna's middle register like any happy radio listener. Similarly, several of the tracks here seem too rooted in the Latin-lite clichés of "La Isla Bonita". With practice--more Lopez CDs will surely follow in the wake of 6's success--the star might develop into a singer worth reckoning with, but for now she stands as a wonderful actress and a musical artist with an unengaging album to her name. --Rickey Wright

- Good, but she can and does better
Jennifer Lopez's debut album is a mixture of different styles and sounds but is fairly subtle in doing this. There's pop, latino, rnb and a bit of dance added into some of the songs (especially Waiting Fot Tonight). If you like your pop music you should like this.
However, I only gave this album 3 stars because no way are all the tracks good. They can get all to samey, but then again there are quite a lot of songs on the record.
I have about 5 songs that I really really like, these are;
- Let's get loud, a fiesty girl powered latino dance number.
- Feelin' so good, has a heavy, pure Rnb vibe and features rapper Fat Joe. Third single to be released.

- Urban Classic. J-Lo Should Not Have Left This Style Behind.
This was the debut LP of now-modern day icon Jennifer Lopez, was released way back in 1999 when the young starlet was not much more than a wannabe. Now, nearly 6 years on, such a time seems difficult to remember. Lopez, if of course, one of the most famous women in the world. Interestingly, a quick listen to this album, even if it is six years old, reveals just how well it's aged. The best of the LP still sound fresh and exciting even now. In particular, the album's lead single "If You Had My Love" could easily be last week's #1 Urban Single. It sounds amazing to this day. well i gotta tell ya i love this girl and i dont care about any of u haters..okok about this cd..u have to buy it bcuz its jlo ppl! im her hugest fan..if you had my love is a good song to let guys know she is worth ur trust (if that makes sense)waiting for tonight i love the original the remix ruined the nice sound in the beginning of the song i love that song it reminds me of waiting for a big date or something..no me ames no idea wth thats about and feels so good is a good song about goin out with ur girls not thinkin about guys but life in general hehe..and yeah this cd is da bomb i like also too late and should have something..ok go buy it! if ur a jlo fan ull love it!! promise.

I bought this cd ages ago and sort of pushed it to the back of the pile. However I listened to this cd again and it is excellent. Each song is excellent. It contains several genre's which would appeal to all listeners. Whether you want an upbeat tune, or latino luxury or simply a lucious love song, this album contains it all and much more. It contains a few ballads in Spanisg such as "no me ames", which is truly uplifting. Buy it now, if you have JLO (2nd Album) or "This is Me" Third album, you'll love this

Jennifer Lopez sure knows what she wants but hasn't quite figured how to get it! On her debut album 'On the 6' Jennifer attempts to wow the pop crowd with a predictable mix of Latin, R&B and dance fused pop. On the opening track 'If You Had My Love' she gets it right with the help of top R&B producer, Rodney Jerkins, who manages to weave her very weak vocals over some contemporary R&B beats to great effect. When she moves onto the slower R&B fare of 'Should've Never' and 'Too Late' she fails miserably because of poor vocal performance. In the chomps of Toni Braxton or Whitney Houston the tracks would still be pedestrian but at least listenable, and for me that's where this album falls down.
