Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
With a debut as smashing as their 1997A Toda Cuba le Gusta, the Afro Cuban All Stars would have to hit on all cylinders to not fall short on their sophomore effort. Alas, they don't hit the high marks that seemed so effortless on their debut, heading away from the earthy, complex body of emotions their horns carried and towards a style that reaches unabashedly for pop audiences. Of course, the pop audiences they address are old world enough to like their flute solos to be bombarded by big brass riffs and set off by crooning, sweet vocals. This brings up a key point: even a disappointing album by the likes of the Afro Cuban All Stars is better than most of what makes the airwaves, from Havana to Miami to Montreal. Aside from the more obviously polished elements, there are lots of traces of the band's debut, with the timeworn playing--especially on piano and percussion--sounding both overly commercial and terrifically organic. On many of these tunes, the cleanness of the sound draws the ear away from the music and towards the sonic varnish, the crystal clarity that in many cases would be cause for celebration. Here, it urges the side-by-side inspection of A Toda Cuba le Gusta and Distinto, Diferente, the latter title signalling that the band has sought another terrain, maybe that commanded by Los Van Van prior to the rise of the Buena Vista Social Club and its roster of stars. --Andrew Bartlett

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Might disappoint some.
This album sounds a bit different from the All Stars' debut. It's not its style, though: everything is still there, from the subtly understated percussion to the stabbing, polished horn section. This is a conceptually different album - and some of the conceptual difference is carried over into its sound. There are a couple of songs that feel far detached from the 50s tradition the All Stars are thought to emulate, especially so when the lyrics are considered (the title track being the album's finest example).

Also, the varety of styles on the recording is a little out of sync - you'll hear a bolero, a splendid piece of Afro-Cuban jazz, and even a son in the finest tradition of Compay Segundo. And this is exactly the point at which ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A new direction
The second album by the All-Stars and equally good as the first but it does vere off into a slightly different direction, so its not a repeat of the first album, it's more dance-y.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Better than Buena Vista...
Ok so you've bought Buena Vista, seen the film, impressed your mates, bought some bongos...what next?

Afro Cuban All stars, has a similar formula, but for some reason, is brighter, more fun, better produced and funkier than anything I've ever heard from Cuba. This is a real Gem - even if you dont understand the languages, the emotions come across with timeless beauty.

I like the way none of the songs are dominated by a single vocalist or instument - it comes across as a real team effort, especially when you wonder how in God's name the horns managed to sound so tight and effortless throughout the record.

A lot of love and joy has gone into this, and it really shows. The extended CD is really wrth it if you can stretch ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brassy, bright, brash and brilliant
This second release by the Afro-Cuban All-Stars is, to these ears, a marked improvement on the band's World Circuit debut album. The overall sound recording is much brighter and somehow the band sounds much, much tighter - perhaps the result of a punishing series of high profile gigs around the world in the interim.

From the outset, the music is bright and bouncy with vocals brilliantly punctuated by intricate, tightly executed brass arrangements. The rhythm section simply burns along and the spirit of the whole album has me reaching for the rum and limes on even the greyest of English days.
