Amazon.co.uk Review:
The years have endowed Saturday Night Fever with a powerful, elegiac quality since its explosive release in 1977. It was the must-see movie for a whole generation of adolescents, sparking controversy for rough language and clumsily realistic sex scenes which took teen cinema irrevocably into a new age. And of course, it revived the career of the Bee Gees to stratospheric heights, thanks to a justifiably legendary soundtrack which now embodies the disco age. But Saturday Night Fever was always more than a disco movie. Tony Manero is an Italian youth from Brooklyn straining at the leash to escape a life defined by his family, blue collar job and his gang. Disco provides the medium for him to break free.

It was the snake-hipped dance routines which made John Travolta an immediate sex symbol. But seen today, his performance as Tony is compelling: rough-hewn, certainly, but complex and true, anticipating the fine screen actor he would be recognised as 20 years later. Scenes of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge, representing Tony's route to a bigger world, now have an added poignancy, adding to Saturday Night Fever's evocative power. It's a bittersweet classic.

On the DVD: Saturday Night Fever is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround soundtrack, both of which help to recapture the unique atmosphere of the late 1970s. The main extra is a director's commentary from John Badham, with detailed descriptions of casting and the improvisation behind many of the scenes, plus the unsavoury reality behind Travolta's iconic white disco suit. --Piers Ford

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Classic drama with terrific Travolta
John Travolta (Grease) stars as Tony Manero, a troubled 19 year old who's joy in life comes from the dance floor, and when Stephanie comes along, he finds a whole new world to be explored in dancing.

This 1977 music drama is one of the reasons Travolta is one of Hollywood's most established stars with a mesmerizing Oscar nominated performance as Tony Manero, the troubled paint store assistant whose only joy comes from dancing. Travolta is an icon on the dance floor in this picture, with sweet moves and a great image, especially in his slick white suit. Dancing moves, motives and timing all combine to give him one of his best performances in his career.

Having a difficult home life but a joyous night life gives the film ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sublime script, great soundtrack
I love the sense of place in this film. It's rooted in Brooklyn, and it describes the tension with Manhattan on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Travolta is charismatic, funny and tormented. His female lead is a bit up herself, but very pretty and interesting. The dance scenes are fantastic.

The gritty social background and bad language makes this film a precursor to The Sopranos. Ahead of its time and timeless.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A classic which captured an era and lives on
No matter what you think of 70's disco music, this is classic cinema. The acceptance of dance music in today's charts and airwaves owes much to the disco era of the 1970's.

If you've ever worked hard all week and, then, when Friday or Saturday night comes around and you're in two minds about going out or snuggling up for a quiet night, well after watching this DVD you'll want to go out.

There are some risque moments (usually in the back seats of cars) so you might not want to watch this with your grandmother present.

Overall, a feel good film with Travolta's solo dance to 'You Should Be Dancing' the prime moment.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An Iconic Film !!
The music in this film is amazing. Nearly 30 years later, it is still as good as ever.

Saturday Night Fever captures the 70's to perfection. No other film has.

John Travolta is SO sexy in this film. I am not sure of the casting of Karen Gorney though. Tony needed a tall, dark haired sexy woman to match his sexy moves. John Travolta's moves are fantastic and sexy. He can REALLY dance, and John is a great actor too.

John Travolta was going through alot during the making of this film, but his performance is amazing. He worked hard for that body, and those dance moves, but it really pays off. This is a film John Travolta should be very proud of.

That famous white suit with the black shirt is iconic ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Still incredibly powerful
Many, many years ago, my mother and older sister sneaked me into see this film at one of the plethora of wonderful old cinemas that used to exist in the heart of Birmingham city centre. I think I was 13 at the time and although I fancied myself as a punk rocker, I instantly fell in love with this film. And my love for it has never waivered

This is John Travolta's defining moment, and like so many talented actors, it's almost a shame he won this part so early in his career as quite honestly, it would be pretty well impossible for him ever to better this.

Nostalgic yet brutal, protraying the hope and dreams of early adulthood, yet pulling no punches about the harsh reality of growing up on the wrong side of a big city, this ... Read More:
