Between vocal sampling as a standard studio trick and Vocal Sampling the group, a chasm yawns, as Cambio de Tiempo makes clear. Take track 7, "Mi Guantanamera", in which the singers sail along over drums, kazoos, and maracas: in fact there are no extraneous instruments at all--just cheeks, cupped hands, tongues, and teeth, with which extraordinary effects are achieved. Sometimes known as Six Cuban Bobby McFerrins, this acapella group has become celebrated worldwide over the past few years: as Philip Sweeney's Rough Guide to Cuban Music observes, they were influenced by both McFerrin and by the Cuban doo-wop of Los Zafiros, but their highly original approach to the human voice has taken them a long way further. Occasionally the trick is a bit transparent--too many nasal "ping-pangs"--but there are also times when you really do think you're hearing a full-scale band. And as music pure and simple, this CD is as beguiling and infectious as the Buena Vista heroes we more usually associate with Cuba. These boys are in some cases classically trained, and the resulting ensemble performances are highly polished. They sign off with a "Zarathustra"--better known as the soundtrack to the film 2001--where the massed brass is almost tangible. This is very, very clever. --Michael Church

- Who needs instruments?
Contorting their voices into a full band of trumpets, trombones, guitars, ukeleles and percussion capable of beautiful harmonies and deliciously fat brass cords across a range of dynamics and styles, these six cuban singers give us a refreshing new look at the cuban way of life. If you enjoyed the likes of Buena Vista Social Club then you are sure to love the enthusiasm and humour that enfuse each track of this album, from the old favourite Guantanamera to the awesome Así Hablaba Zarathustra (Space Odessy 2001). Buying the album may be a poor substitute for going to see these six cuban singers live but if you can convince yourself that they really do use no other instruments than their hands and voices, you are in for a treat!
