Something like a perfect artistic union is achieved in the major components of Paris, Texas: the twang of Ry Cooder's guitar, the lonely light of Robbie Muller's camera, the craggy landscape of Harry Dean Stanton's face. In his greatest role, longtime character actor Stanton plays a man brought back to his old life after wandering in the desert (or somewhere) for four years. He has a 7-year-old son to get to know, and his wife has gone missing. The material is much in the wanderlust spirit of director Wim Wenders, working from a script by Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson. If the long climactic conversation between Stanton and Nastassja Kinski renders the movie uneven and slightly inscrutable, it's hard to think of a more fitting ending--and besides, the achingly empty American spaces stick longer in the memory than the dialogue. Winner of the top prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. --Robert Horton

- Fragile and broken families
I saw a Sam Shepherd play recently, so I was quite surprised to see that Sam Shepherd wrote this screenplay. But having seen two pieces of his work, you can detect a style. Shepherd examines the dark side of families, the frustrations, the pain, the fights and their consequences. He likes long monologues uncovering a web of events and feelings. I think the dialogue in this film is superb.

The landscape and the music is also rich in metaphor. Kinski is a wisperish, idealised beauty. The other adult characters are weatherbeaten by life's demands. This is a long, slow and often banal film, but it says something about real lives. I first saw this film over twenty years ago. It lingers and haunts, and that thematic strum of the guitar ... - Vapid nonsense with superficial classiness.
The storyline is unconvincing and without logic. The acting is amateurish; characters are stilted in behaviour, their speech separated with long pauses which for me doesn't make pregnant with meaning, just boring. Camera-work is posed, self-conscious and arty - loads of shots of Harry Dean Stanton (Travis) in profile musing, agonising craggily, driving through the night etc etc. Some vistas. And Ry Cooder's score matched the film.

Yeh, "...completely pointless and a waste of time..... "

Every SINGLE shot in this film is like a beautifully composed and lovingly crafted photograph. I defy anyone not to be moved by the cinematography alone, not to mention the beautifully told, heartbreaking story and amazingly understated, and emotionally charged perfomances.

If you feel nothing watching this film, you are not a fan of cinema.

- Oh Dear God
Deceived by all the excellent reviews I decided to rent out this "classic" and was ready to enjoy a masterpiece. Having been so unbelievably bored out of my head for the past two hours, I have decided to write my first online review on Amazon (yes, the film ist still going on...). There is not much I am able to say as I have lost the will to live. Except for a couple of half hearted moments, this film was (is) completely pointless and a waste of time.....

- A Timeless Masterpiece
Absolute magic from the first to the last frame. I first saw this film on its realease over 20 years ago, and it has been with me ever since. Harry Dean Stanton's Travis sails so close to the wind for me it's almost impossible to watch him. This film shot me through the heart when I first saw it. How can people so in love damage eachother so profoundly? Raw. Rich. Intense. Delicious. I just watched it again and it's brilliance and beauty is undimmed.

It's not pacey or action packed, but it is undoubtedly one of the greatest films ever made. Pure poetry. Pure class. What a joy!
