    Synopsis:
Reese Witherspoon stars in SWEET HOME ALABAMA, a charming romantic comedy directed by Andy Tennant. Witherspoon is Melanie Carmichael, a Southern girl who leaves her past behind in order to find success as a fashion designer in New York City. On the night of a hugely important show, her charming and romantic boyfriend, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her. It is at that point that Melanie flees for Alabama, hoping to take care of some unfinished business before Andrew and his mother, New York mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergan), discover the truth about her. The truth is that Melanie, whose real last name is Smooter, is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to grant her a divorce. As Melanie reunites with her parents and old friends, she is forced to reevaluate her new-and-improved self. In the process, she rediscovers a love that she thought she had lost. Tennant's film is elevated by Witherspoon's mere presence. Her rare blend of intelligence, wit, and beauty are a wonder to behold.

    From the Back Cover:
In this delightful romantic comedy, Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) stars as sophisticated Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York fashion designer who suddenly finds herself engaged to the city’s most eligible bachelor. But this is no fairy tale romance for Melanie. She has a secret past that includes Jake (Josh Lucas, A Beautiful Mind), the backwoods husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end their marriage and sever all ties with her past once and for all, Melanie returns to Alabama. But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Past catches up to Melanie
Melanie Carmichael is living the life of her dreams; her fashion line is becoming a success, she's dating a handsome politician, and she has a bright happy city life. What could possibly go wrong?

The past she ran away from to have it all is slowly catching up with her and her fiance's mother doesn't really want her in the family. The secret life Melanie left back in Pidgeon Creek in Alabama is about to make a huge impact on her life as she has to return back to finalise a divorce from her first husband - who she hasn't told anyone in her new life about.

Life hasn't really changed much in Pidgeon Creek, but Melanie sticks out like a sore thumb with her sharp tongue, cynicism and hoity toity attitude. And to make ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Career woman's dilemma: success or happiness?
This film tells the story of a small town Southern girl made good. Witherspoon has left the small Alabama town she grew up in, and is now a high price fashion designer in New York City. She is also engaged to a wealthy and successful man, but feels a pang of nostalgia for her hometown. When she pays a flying visit, she instantly feels a sense of belonging here that she feels is ever elusive in New York, where she is still sneered at as a peasant from the South. She also bumps into her high school sweet heart, and faces a tough choice between her high powered fiancé and career in New York, and her homely but somewhat more modest first love and small town. Will she have success in New York, or trade success for personal happiness in her old little ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Honest
I love this film. I wasn't sure when I read the reviews but when I saw it I felt inspired! Reese witherspoon manages that in most of the films, but this one had an honest feel to it. As a viewer who is addicted to romantic comedies, I can offer a fair oppinion! The lead character (for once) is not perfect... and the plot has some real twists. If you're looking for philosophy this probably isn't the best, but romance with a southern accent... look no further!

    Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Ouch..kinda bad....
This movie had no story line. I found it boring. Not Witherspoons greatest.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best romantic comedy?
I'd wanted this film for absolutaly AGES and when i finally got it i watched it right away. The first time i saw it i thought it was nothing special but then i watched it again and now i'm addicted!

    Soppy? yes
    Romantic? yes
    Cute comedy? yes

It is perfect for a girly night with friends or on your own with nothing but a bag of popcorn for company.

Witherspoon is truly fantastic and you can't help but fall in love with Jake (and feel sorry for Bobby-Ray when she spills his best kept secret) the ending is predictable but sooooooo sweet.
