Barbarito Torres's self-titled follow-up to his 1999 debut,HAVANA CAF+, travels one step beyond the Buena Vista SocialClub, with a tighter focus on his superlative virtuoso laoud (lute) playing. However, this isn't a purely instrumental effort-vocals are provided here courtesy of his sister Conchita, bandmate Victor Villa, and a variety of invited guests including the hypnotic Omara Portuondo and the earthy-voicedPio Leyva. But when Torres and guests such as Chucho Valdesand Jorge Reyes finally do dig deep into an instrumental melody such as "La Comparsa", which veers from classically influenced to modern jazz within a few bars, the results are incendiary. And, of course, Torres's silvery lute is omnipresent throughout, providing a cool virtuoso counterpoint to theband's shifting rhythms that's simultaneously integral to and the focal point of each track.
