- Worse than a virus
An appalling program. To install, it insisted on enabling cookies and ActiveX, and disabling Ad-blockers. I have to disable my firewall to update it, and even then it only works occasionally. Once running it is extremely intrusive, and my PC performance is now about a fifth of what it was. I'm going back to AVG - that gave me no trouble, and was free.

I'm not a computer genius but I have a little knowledge and I can safely say that this was a complete waste of money and time. When I tried to install the software it slowed my pc (which is brand new) to walking pace. To give you an example, it took me 4 hours to access my control panel! Also McAfee have emergency technical help numbers but they are only open between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday so if you have a technical emergency outside of these hours then bad luck. When I managed to get on the McAfee website from another pc I found a chatroom. When I looked at the chatroom I found that all the messages were about how slow this product made your pc. There wasn't ONE message about a virus! Doesn't really fill you with confidence does it?

I installed this on my new system running XP Home and Broadband and it is fine. It so simple - it just runs in the background updateing itself whenever. I highly recommend it. That said I also tried it on my old system that was running Windows 98 SE, and on a laptop running Windows ME and in both cases it choked up the system slowing it down so much that it drove me crazy! I expect that the updates may slow up your internet aswell if you are using dialup because they're always fairly large files.

I'm running Windows 98SE with a pay as you go dial up, and this package just drives me up the wall so much I uninstalled it and decided to risk virus infection for a time rather than keep it on my PC. It constantly tries to update itself and resets scheduler if I try to change it, and tries to connect to the internet on boot up and peridically thereafter unless I turn off scheduler for the session and cancel Mcupdate via a Ctrl/Alt/Delete. Now it's developed the endearing habit of performing an illegal shutdown if you click on "Finish" after you have updated the virus files, meaning you could lose work and do in your hard drive. I bought this recently to replace version 5. It installed easily, deleting version 5 and also deleted an old version 3 (where did that come from ?). It runs fine and doesn't overload my pc (Windows Me, 1.3GHz Athlon). Updates come in automatically. If McAfee only improved the user interface it would score 5, though there aren't many settings to tweak so it's not a major gripe.
