- Too eccentric and unsettled for me
This recording by Gould is far too eccentrically moody: it unsettles. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, if that is what the music is designed to do: but, was that Bach's purpose? Too much Gould, not enough Bach.

- Gould's 48 Preludes And Fugues
I like the fact that Glenn Gould makes the fugues sound so clear by not using the pedal on the piano. Compared to other pianists, Gould's articulation has a better sound. Other pianists play it smoothly with the pedal, and they express different feelings than Gould does. Gould does not play it smoothly. I'd recommend this recording for people who are interested in hearing different types of fugues.

- GOULD WELL TEMPERED
One should not call a recording `epoch-making' unless it really marks some kind of epoch, but Gould's `48' is an epoch-making issue in the proper rigour of the term. What Gould achieved was to restore the art of playing Bach on the piano to full respectability after the over-long dominance of the purist school that insisted on the harpsichord. For me, Gould's career marks another kind of epoch too, the kind that can only be made by a player of exceptional genius and individuality.

Gould must surely have been one of the greatest players who ever laid a hand on the instrument. Even in an era of outstanding technical accomplishment, the extraordinary control and evenness of his touch and the phenomenal precision of his ornamentation ... Read More:

- Quirky but brilliant
Although perhaps quirky, Gould's vocal accompaniament e.t.c they characterise his individual approach to the music, in his tempi, articulation and phrasing. His lightning quick pace in the third prelude of book 1 is one such example and is simply astounding. Even if some listeners are put off by the groans of the pianist no one can deny his brilliance in playing "The Well-Tempered Klavier". With Barenboim's latest release of this classic work being overly romanticised and Richter's recording being perhaps too leagato at stages, this must be the best on recording of "The Well-Tempered Klavier". Whether the groans from Gould are too much to live with, or just add to the character? That is for the listener to decide.
