It's thrilling--in any language--to hear new music from Colombian superstar Shakira. And it's been a long time coming. Shakira's English crossover opus, Laundry Service, was released in 2001. The Spanish Donde Estan Los Ladrones came three years before that. Fijacion Oral, Volumen 1 is the first of two new discs; an English counterpart is due in November. Shakira's bleating, biting voice is in fine form, and it gives the material an electric urgency. She's girlish and innocent during the glittering "Dia de Enero" and sensual and seductive amid the thundering beats of "Lo Imprescindible." A talented stable of producers, including former Soda Stereo vocalist Gustavo Cerati, has swathed Shakira in rhythm-based arrangements. But the album's best moments come when she channels her inner--and innate--rock goddess. "La Tortura" is a hurts-so-good break-up duet with Alejandro Sanz, and "Escondite Ingles" rides a beach-party guitar groove. - FIJACION DE LA SHAKIROMANIA
Otro gran trabajo de una poderosa artista; con este disco Shakira incursiona en nuevas facetas de su carrera, como el cantar en duetos con Alejandro Sanz (otro grande) en LA TORTURA, y hacerse acompanar de Gustavo Ceratti (lider de Soda Estereo) en DIA ESPECIAL; tambien incursiona nuevos generos como la samba en OBTENER UN SI (como si fuera una melodia tipica de sergio Mendes y Brazil'66) y el reggaeton en LA TORTURA; siempre sorprendiendonos con impactantes baladas como TUS PUPILAS y LA PARED y deleitandonos con melodias romanticas como DIA DE ENERO (la cual se la dedica a su novio) y baladas rock como la tremenda NO (que gran balada!!), Shakira no deja de sorprendernos con excelentes discos !!!

- A mixed bag...
This album is very strange in the way that some songs are truly excellent whilst others are cringe worthy and actually quite embarrassing. You don't often come across an album with such a mixture like this, because the standout tracks aren't just good, they're brilliant.

Firstly, "Fijación Oral" is without a doubt better than Shakira's last album, "Laundry Service". Unlike that however, the entire album is sung in Spanish and generally a bit more interesting. I get the impression that this album cost a lot, because it sounds very well produced and polished. It also seems to be trying to impress everyone, which is ultimately the album's biggest fault. I've followed Shakira for a long time. From her initial teen "rocker" songs to her americanized latin-rocker turned hottie Pepsi spokesperson. Well, I have to admit her latest iteration was better than this album. It does not bring anything to the genre and does not bring anything from the original shakira. Skip it if you can.

- Another superb album from Shakira
If you've heard La Tortura, chances are you're probably planning on buying this album on the merits of that fantastic track alone - and so you should but don't be disappointed with your purchase when you listen to it for the first time. There are no other tracks like La Tortura on this album (apart from the remix obviously!) but then Shakira isn't one for releasing songs or albums that sound like each other. This is typically eclectic and passionate Shakira and the album will grow and grow on you, not least with the intensity of songs such as La Pared and the tragic but brilliant "No". Other highlights include Para Obtener Un Si, which sounds like it's from a different era altogether; Lo Imprescindible; En Tus Pupilas; Dia Especial; and the sweet ... Read More:

Having played the superb 'Donde Estan Los Ladrones' and 'Laundry Service' to death, I was relieved to get Shakira's latest album for Christmas. It doesn't have the instant appeal of her aforementioned offerings (aside from the fantastic La Tortura) but it's certainly a grower. Very 80s sounding and Annie Lennox-esque in places and thus sometimes sounds older than Los Ladrones but there are some massive tunes to get carried away with. Worst: Escondite Ingles - I always forward it. Best: La Pared (accoustic), Obtener un Si, La Tortura, No, En Tus Pupilas - actually pretty much the rest of the album. Buy it!!
