This is an enjoyable performance of a lively, colourful and comical opera based on the fairy tale Cinderella - complete with ugly sisters, Dandini and so on. The American mezzo Frederica von Stade makes a fetching Cinders, and the Mexican tenor Francisco Araiza is the handsome prince. It's a La Scala production conducted by Abbado and a jolly good show. But buyers should be aware that this is a film and not a stage performance. Therefore the singers are miming and - inevitably - slightly out of synch at times. When it comes to opera on DVD, I like to hear the creak of the floorboards and feel the heat of the crowd.

I first saw this video at the age of 5, when it was on my local television station in the U.S. My parents taped it and in the ensuing twenty years I have watched it more times than I can count. I was captivated by the story and music and over the years it inspired me in so many different directions - to love opera, to study voice, to learn Italian, and many other ways. Frederica von Stade is still my favorite female opera singer. The video is just about worn out and I'm ready to buy its replacement. Since this has become the meterstick by which I measure all other performances it's hard to objectively measure how good it is, but I think the performances and production are outstanding.
