I was looking for something a little different and came across Format's Fabric mix. I bought this alongside the Scratch Perverts Fabric mix. As a fan of DJ Skills, I was sorely disappointed with the Scratch Perverts, considering their combined technical abilities! Therefore - I was left to listen to their selection of tunes - which is OK. But - let's talk more about Format. I rarely write reviews and only do so when compelled to! Format's selection of songs starts strong and just gets better and better throughout. If you enjoyed DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's Brainfreeze - you need to be pressing the "Buy it now" button.

It's all about the beats with DJ Format. He likes the big funky breaks and samples that defined hip-hop before hip-hop went down the rubbish gangsta rap route. His mixing is old skool cutting, chopping and scratching with cool sounding vocal snippets and samples layered up on top. The first few tracks are hip-hop in Formats usual style but he soon moves off on a tangent and starts mixing up old soul tracks with quirky rock n' roll numbers. It seems any record could make it into a Format mix providing he feels the funk in it. This is a wonderful party mix because of his musical tastes and its impossible not to grin from ear to ear when he drops Ella Fitzgerald 'Sunshine of your love'. Yet another cracking mix album brought to you by the lovely people at Fabric. DJ Format is on absolutely top form with this, providing a set that is varied, enjoyable and above all has got the FUNK! Whilst some mixers in the Fabric series have had a slight bias towards their own tunes or labels (Freeland I'm looking at you), Format has gone outright to provide an upbeat mix. Hip-hop posturing and worries about credibility are off the menu, fun and dancing are very much on - `dinner's served so yo, come and get it'. Starting off with a fine selection of laid back hip-hop tunes very much in the mould of Format's own work, the set really gets going when Ella Fitzgerald's version of `Sunshine of your Love' kicks in because thereafter - IT'S HAMMOND ... DJ Format has captured the spirit of the mix tape perfectly, the track selection multiplied by the running order equals Hip - Hop. Not since Andy Smith's original "Document" has a DJ created such a well balanced and riveting mix.

The mixing is well judged and very engaging indeed, just listen to how the brass section on "Sunshine of your love" comes in over "Changes" beats, Format lets both records play together for a few seconds until Ella Fitzgerald and her rhythm section kick in, inspired. As a transitional track to shift the mix into new territory who could ask for more than Ella Fitzgerald covering Cream.
