Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GLyndebourne's Giulio Cesare
A first class performance of a much underrated masterpiece.
All the cast were on top form, and the desire on the part of
the production team to make Handel's music both seductive and
eternal was a success in every way.

I cannot think of a better operatic production on DVD.
Indeed, I would say that it is at least the equal of any
of the many Don Giovanni DVDs currently available.
Sarah Connolly's Cesare is a turly manly portrayal and
is the perfect partner for the Celopatra of Danielle de
Niese whose sheer sexual vivaciousness and sublime,
uninhibited singing reflect a rare talent, and after
viewing certain scenes in Act Three, I became convinced ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Handel at its best
The sound from this DVD is gorgeous, the production is very jolly and tongue in cheek and the singing is wonderful. This is really a great opera, an abundance of great tunes and wonderful orchestration.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Welcome to Giulio Cesare~The Cabaret!
Well,I suppose there always has to be someone swimming against the tide(in reviews) and I am afraid that this time it has to be me.
I WAS thinking of buying this DVD(given that Giulio Cesare is one of my favourite operas) but I am not now(definitely not).
Why?
I recently saw this production on a "big screen" at the Odeon Tunbridge Wells. All credit to Odeon Cinemas they are showing three of Glyndebourne's productions in this way (Cosi,Giulio, and Tristan),at 9 of their cinemas.
First the good(in my opinion) points.
The singing(with one exception, more of that later) and orchestral playing were excellent.
However,David McVicars production was not,he has turned what should be a serious and moving opera into a cabaret farce,I ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Entertainment is not a dirty word
David McVicar's production of Handel's Giulio Cesare is visually sumptuous - action packed, joyful, humorous and colourful. This must have been a wonderful production to see live:- only the best performances of opera transfer well to DVD and, consequently, it is a great credit to this one that it is a joy to watch in the living room.

If, like me, you're a fan of Handel then you'll also find the DVD musically excellent. The singing is first class and the orchestration, under William Christie's conducting of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, superb.

McVicar has gone out to entertain in this production and achieved it. Danielle de Niese's performance as Cleopatra is my favourite of a strong cast - sexy, audaciously acted and ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Impossible to beat?
The only bad thing I can say about this DVD is that it sets an impossibly high standard for Danielle de Niese -- the undoubted star of the show -- to beat. Everything else she does may seem like an anti-climax after this. Let's hope not.

I was not able to see the production at Glyndebourne, but saw it (semi-staged) at the Royal Albert Hall. de Niese's voice filled that vast space and had every member of the audience spell-bound. Of course she has the voice of an angel -- you can hear that yourself from the CD recordings -- but this DVD gives you some idea of her stage-presence, charisma, and acting ability. In the final duet at the Albert Hall, the way she looked adoringly into the eyes of Caesar, you could honestly believe that she was in love ... Read More:
