Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Not the glamour of Covent Garden or the Met but ....
Verdi - La Traviata (Netrebko, Villazon, Rizzi) [2006]

No, the set does not have the glamour of the Met or Covent garden, but the acting and singing easily make up for that .... if you doubt my view, see the reviews for what is the same DVD except that it a 2 disc version (the 2nd disc is behind the scenes etc. for those who want it, otherwise, the same). Netrebko and Villason sing beautifully, which is confirmed by the standing ovation at the end of the Opera. Reviewers at the concert spoke of her (Netrebko's) 'bell-like purity of tone' and 'golden gleam of her voice'.

Worth buying then!? I would say definitely 'yes' but, not if you need to have a sumptious setting on the stage!?

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A Travesty of Traviata
What a travesty of Traviata! With the world's most beautiful soprano (physically and musically)what were the production team thinking about? Why do these people imagine that they can improve on the original. Gilding the lily rarely works. If only this had been done in the same way as the Solti version, i.e. traditionally. It could then have been the benchmark Traviata for years.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Imaginativel Fresh
The mise-en-scene of this version is definitely not for traditionists, but it is very imaginative and symbolic. The singing is fine, esp. for Netrebko's pearly tone. The only problem to me is her vocal strength, which does not convey the dying Violetta. What a contradiction!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What a Traviata !

Incomprehensible that others praise this production. Absolutely ghastly. Netrebko has a fine voice but she was battling against an appalling production - demented. Verdi must have been turning in his grave. Though the singing was of course good the staging was abominable. The choreography was deplorable with Netrebko having to skip around in her nightdress, in her one short dress or in colourful curtain material for most of the opera. No doubt it was meant to be heavily (but in reality incoherently) symbolic with a large clock manned by an elderly gentleman which changed the displayed time in ways not clearly related to the action. It was painful to watch. Listen to it perhaps but switch off the video. Totally disappointing after the ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ignore The First Review At All Costs!
Maybe someone cracked the seal on their whisky a little too soon - for hilariously bad acting do see the '94 Covent Garden version (how wooden is Frank Lopardo?), but for a truly memorable experience watch this version. Preferably without whisky.
