Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Does Hubris Belong In Music?
The first ten years of Zappa's career was characterised by an itinerant desire to see what was around the next musical corner - hippy freak out; surf; orchestral; heavy rock; free jazz; big band; burlesque - it didn't seem to worry Frank that his path was so convoluted he was bound to shed most of his audience as he went.

Apostrophe is still Zappa's most accessible work, and his best selling album to date. Overnite Sensation acts as a suitable opener, but is a strong album in its own right, with almost every track being a classic. Both albums featured extensively throughout live performances for the remainder of Zappa's life.

No surprise then that these two albums have been given the "classic album" treatment. The format ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - If you're a Zappa freak............you'll love this!
I've watched this DVD twice now and it's excellent. My only complaint is it's too short! But, for me, any new footage of Zappa, and there are a few repeats from other releases, i want to see. The contributions from the likes of George Duke, Steve Vai, Ian and Ruth Underwood, the Zappa clan and Billy Bob Thornton are all positive (why wouldn't they be) and reveal some interesting angles on the man. If you're new to Zappa, the two albums in question are certainly a good starting point and would probably be better to listen to the music first, but for Zappa fans......you'll love it........it's a way of life!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An enlightening documentary on two of Zappa's classic 70s albums.
This is an absolutely fascinating documentary on Frank Zappa's two most commercially successful albums from the early 70s - Apostrophe(') & Over-Nite Sensation. There are intelligent and insightful comments from Frank, Gail & Dweezil Zappa, Ruth Underwood, George Duke & Steve Vai among others, along with rare archive footage. Bonus features include live performances of 'Montana' from the Roxy in '73 and 'I'm The Slime' from Saturday Night Live in '76 although it's disappointing that there isn't more live footage of other tracks from the albums. There's also an intriguing visit to Zappa's legendary vaults which contains a treasure-trove of possible future releases.
All in all this DVD is very enlightening about FZ's method of working ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very good material but not enough of it live
For me this is very far from being "for hardcore crazies only". It is revealing, well put together and gives a very full sense of who Frank Zappa is as a person and of his huge and multi-faceted genius. I have been listening to FZ for over 30 years, but I still learned things from the analytical parts. My only disappointment is that there are many excerpts of live playing, but very few full-length live numbers, so it made me even hungrier for a genuine live video and that's why there's no fifth star. But it came close, so don't let that put you off.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - For hardcore crazies only.
Parts of this dvd do indeed bring a tear to ones eye. However it is tv programme and as such the subject matter has been commodified. The celebrity interviews do nothing to enlighten us and the detailed analysis of Franks recording process are subjective and unnecessary. One of the pleasures of this music is the mystery. The listener is free to interpret and imagine.Worth the money for the extras especially the Saturday Night Live version of `I`m the Slime`. Don`t touch that dial people!
