This is the second in a series of very individiual guides written by by this well-known correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. It is both a travel guide AND a first-class collection of local speciality recipes.
She has travelled widely in Europe, the Middle East, the Far Eats, Africa and the Americas. She has lived in England, the USA and France.
Elisabeth de Stroumillo brings three assets to her task: a passion for history, a wide knowledge of architecture and a perspicacious taste for local dishes. In this book she attempts to bring into focus not only places, but the people who animated them in the past. She describes the buildings she most enjoyed visiting; the hotels (usually modest) and bistris of which she has kept the happiest memories; the food she found most delectable, especially those dishes she has been able to recreate at home.
Largely due to her sense of fun and enjoyment, besides being very informative, this book is stimulating. The inclusion of ten area maps relieves the readers of much laborious research and difficult decisions when planning the journey. The first of these guides described Normandy and Brittany.
