Written for the general paediatrician in an inclusive style, the book is readable and educational. Lacks the pomposity of many medical texts. Importantly the limits of current understanding are described. Perspectives are wide-ranging including those of radiologists, urologists, psychosocial aspects and disease overseas. Clear advice is given on when to consult a nephrologist.

The most fluently written chapter concerns antenatal diagnosis by Lewis. A forward-looking and thought-provoking section by Knoers and Monnens discusses developments in genetics of renal disease. The chapters on cystic disease and disorders of micturition convey sheer enthusiasm for their subject by the authors. Evans and Shenoy review evidence particularly well. Chronic and end-stage renal failure is dealt with comprehensively.

The sections on chemical pathology and acute renal failure are quite laden with information. They capture the fear of potentially not understanding the subject and might require a re-read. Whilst of interest, the chapter on disease in developing countries adopts quite a formal tone. Perhaps the issue of peritoneal dialysis in neonates is side-stepped. Missing is the direct experiential voice of the child and family, another subject in itself.

Overall the text is an illuminating and useful resource. Read it for your membership.
