Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Hazel takes over!
Watching this wonderful series again from the start one is able to see the development between seasons of the series' greatest strengths. Let's face it: it was always the characters. But rarely is the character of Hazel Forrest/Bellamy given much of a mention and yet her gentle integration into the series is one of the highlights of the 5 seasons. Hazel is unique amongst the regulars in that she is really neither "upstairs" or ""downstairs" and has to win acceptance and credibility from both factions in the house. How she accomplishes this is at the crux of these episodes. Much praise is due to Meg Wynn Owen's performance offering both vulnerability and courage, but very much the latter as she grows in confidence. A real treat and the one of the best sets of episodes in the overall collection.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - One of the best Tv dramas available today
This was the first edition I bought of Upstairs Downstairs, it is also one of the best collections. I was quite choked up when Lady Marjory dies on he fateful journey on the RMS Titanic on her way to see Miss Elizabeth in New York. New faces and exciteing plots make this volume one of the very best, this series really does show the true likeness of Edwardian society

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An intelligent soap opera, entertainment through history
This whole series is an illustration of the current "dumbing down" of British television. This was prime time viewing in the early 1970s and yet it demanded a certain amount of background historical knowledge and a degree of concentration to follow the story lines. Particularly impressive is how the parallel stories were told. The viewer is equally interested in the upstairs and downstairs characters and events. All of the characters are well drawn and consistent throughout the whole series. Beautifully acted as well. One would have to single out Hudson, Rose Mrs. Bridges and Mr Bellamy. I defy anyone not to be engaged by the characters and the plots of the series.
