Rating: - It's just....OK.
soft, laid back, boring, leaves you feeling a bit down, but very nice at the same time. retro vibe, mediocre lyrics, not a patch on Winehouse, but still very nice, interesting vocals sometimes, othertimes sounds like shes drunk, but still very nice. the only up tempo track is the fantastic Mercy, Warwick Ave and Stepping Stone equally good. Worth buying, but dont expect to still be blown away in 6 months time, or even 6 weeks time, actually I was bored after 6 days.

Rating: - Maybe I'm too old to enjoy 60s music.
I went through my 60s phase in the 80s, actually listening to 60s musicians.

This is really a 3.5 star review. Duffy is a singer very much from the Tom Jones' school of shouting a good tune. I'm not buying into the idea that she's a great singer - she's a powerful singer.

I feel sorry for people who've already bought the album because "Mercy" is the only track to have been given a radio-friendly gloss. Subsequent singles are almost certainly going to be re-mixed from the album tracks to give a richer sound. As is there isn't a solitary track on the album that would generate singles buzz the same as "Mercy".

However, overall I'm enjoying the album because I really do love the 60s sound and Duffy is no worse than many similar artistes from that era who managed to put out a few good singles. But consider this, this is music attempting to co-opt an era that had such British superstars as Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Duffy bumps elbows most comfortably with Lulu.

Rating: - The Best Of The Retro Singers
Duffy's 60s soul diva voice is just stunning. It's curious that the 'accusation' that she is just a 'retro' artist is taken so seriously. Yes, she does sound like past artists, but only the very best of them and with enough of her own character to mark herself out as a truly unique talent. The creamy smooth production and arrangements are entirely suited to her vocal style and we are introduced to some wonderful new songs. If I had to choose one to showcase the inherent quality of the album it would undoubtedly be 'Stepping Stone'.
Buy it, if you don't like it there really is no hope...
