I expected so much more from this album, to me its one of those albums that have 2 good songs and the rest of the albums a bit naff. Its ok for background music, but its only Mercy that stands out so much because its so different from any of the songs, its an upbeat song and the rest is just too slow.

A sensational album - worth the entrance song alone.An amazing voice complemented by some brilliant songs.The title track is stunning in every way possible.Forget any negative references to her sounding like "whoever" from the sixties - it's more than welcome to hear "real" songs rather than the manufactured rubbish we've had to put up with for many years.Long may she write - and sing.

Rating: - The best find in a long time. Awesome voice.
There's talent like Amy Winehouse and then there's a couple of levels up. Duffy is up with the best British female singers of the past 40 years. This album is a retro album - that there's no doubt - but it works. It's a mixture of Phil Spector, the Walker Brothers and Dusty Springfield but it has a modern slant on the sixties sound. The single 'Mercy' is the best single so far this year and will be hard to beat. Other tracks like 'Rockferry' and 'Distant Dreamer' confirm she has a strong voice. The arrangements are deep and powerful which makes a welcome change from some of the weak stuff that has been floating around over the past few years. No names but you know who you are! Duffy - good luck, you deserve it.

I've been waiting for this album for ages! The singles 'Rockferry' and Mercy' provided the perfect tasters for Duffy's debut and fit effortlessly amongst songs that already sound timeless in their quality. I found early track Warwick Avenue and beautiful album closer 'Distant Dreamer' immediate in their appeal, proof of the album's consistency from start to end.

The production is top-class and Duffy's voice the perfect blend of honeyed cuteness and emotion - something which she manages to convey in bucketloads throughout the album. She is able to carry off ballads and uptempo tracks with equal ease, perfectly illustrated by the aforementioned singles. It is clear from the first listen to this album of its depth, carried admirably by Duffy's incredible voice and every track leaves you wanting more.

Perfect for any time of the year, there's a warm smokiness to the music that goes straight to your heart - all it takes is one listen and you'll be totally in love with Duffy. With both Mercy and the album itself shooting straight to number 1, 2008 looks set to be a massive year for her and i'm so glad she's having this success.

Overall, a charming debut that most definitely deserves all the praise that has been headed its way. If i was to pick one highlight though, it would have to be the title track. It is truly epic in its beauty, the chorus soaring in its intensity. Simply magical.
