DVD : I Am Legend (2 Disc Special Edition) [2007]

Rating: - Watch the alternate ending!
Ignore the 1-star review yes the special effects weren't great, but the alternative version of this film is actually a better because of the different ending.

The theatrical version of the film is good, the alternative version is very good.

Rating: - Complete let down
The thing that is most annoying about this film is that it had a chance of brilliance. The subject matter is absolutely fantastic (so good that you wonder how they screwed it all up), and finally, with today's technology and the large budget, it initially seems that we have been transported to a different world. In terms of production design and setting this film is amazing. It is so well done that you never question the believability of the piece. There's also Will Smith, who does a very good job with the dire script he's given to work with.

Annoyingly though, things go downhill from the meeting of the mutants. It turns into a film that seemed that it might have something to say into a typical action film, relying on CGI, guns, and cool stunts to make a profit. Why they chose the easy way to make money I don't know. Also, on a less film-as-art level, the CGI on the mutants themselves is pretty bad.

So after about half way through the film I really don't care anymore, I don't care if he dies, I don't care to find our if he is indeed the last man on earth or not, and I really really don't care to see another badly done action set piece. The sad thing is, that despite initial good prospects, this film just doesn't know where to go.

This all said and done I'll be sure to find a copy of the book and give it a read, by all accounts it's a lot more substantial than this heartless effort.

Rating: - Good intentions, but doesnt live up to the book!
When I first heard of another movie adaptaion of the "I am Legend" book I had high hopes. Will Smith has made some excellent movies throughout his career (Wild, Wild West aside!), and is a likeable leading man. All the early preview reviews seemed positive, so it was with some disapointment that I left the cinema shaking my head upon its release. The reasons for my consternation... the ending! I fully realises why Hollywood makes changes to some adaptations of books, but in this case it seems an absolute travesty to change it so massively. The book contains what I hold to be one of the best gut wrenching endings ever written. I dont totally hate this movie, it has some nice touches, but to so fundementally change the stories ending I'm suprised they were allowed to call it "I am Legend". **Update 21/5/08** The "alternative" ending show cased on this version of the DVD release doesnt improve things for me... its an ending further removed from the book than the one on the theatrical release version! In closing, its an okay movie, but I implore you.... PLEASE PLEASE READ THE BOOK!

Rating: - Nothing special here
No matter how special this special edition is, it won't sort out all the poor CGI, the bad direction, the weak ending and the throw away feel that makes this film seem like one of the biggest let downs of the last couple of years. It's a bit like the film Starship Troopers, someone took a wonderful book and make a travesty of it - and the worst thing is, now it's been done you know there won't be another attempt for a long time; and you just know it could have been great. Special edition? How about making a special effort to make a film that Empire film magazine (www.empireonline.co.uk) would give 5 stars to, as opposed to the one made here which achieved only 3 stars from Empire.
I'll give you 3 stars as a starter, deduct 1 for messing up one one my favourite books and the ending and deduct another because I don't need to know any more in depth background stuff about how you did the dodgy CGI - I've already seen enough.

Rating: - Awesome
I saw the film soon after it came out, and it was one of the best I've seen in a while.
The storyline, while being a little overused, had been done well, and while, as the other reviewer said, it is like 28 days later, I think it is much better.
The only bad thing I found about this film was the ending, which was too abrupt and quick to happen after the climax of the film
But it's still worth watching
