This has to be the most dismal version of Sherlock Holmes' famous case I've ever witnessed. Holmes himself has been disasterously miscast. For one thing he looks nothing like Conan Doyle's detective. Not only that, but with his beating up cabbies and shooting up in public toilets he's more like an Eastenders character (it seems that having made Eastenders an unwatchable, sensationalist mess the BBC are now doing the same with Sherlock Holmes). Watson is presented as an irritating chinless wonder, and Sir Henry is just boring. The one good performance comes from Richard E Grant, who makes a superbly scheming Stapleton (why didn't they let him play Holmes? He'd have been great!) Then of course there's the hound.
