This book is so well written and witty, describing an idylic life in Spain that I am sure many will be tempted to follow in Chris's and my own footsteps. I have been through the same story as this family, having lived in Spain for the past sixteen years, longer than Chris. I speak fluent Castellano, the same as him. My warning about his book is unless you can speak Spanish perfectly, you will never enjoy half the experiences described. If you are willing to learn the language, then "Driving Over Lemmons" is so good and an inspiration. If you are inspired and are up for it then Spain is still a good choice. This is a BIG fold-down map - ain't it always the way, all the 'key' places/roads/etc., are on the folds! Seriously, the BIG format is un-useful if you're driving long distance. It's a PAIN to keep stopping and re-folding - buy a book.

I can only comment on the section on Almeria region, an area which I have been to a number of times and which I am starting to explore more. I bought this guide to help me find out more and was pleased with the level of information on history, architecture, etc. However I was disappointed with the way the author dismisses so many places because they do not meet what appear to be his lofty criteria of 'old and untouched Spain'. Spain is rapidly changing and development is reaching into even remote areas. This should be accepted and dealt with more maturely. Despite an unusually high number of flaws, this is nevertheless a book that will help you get the most out of your time in Andalucia. Perhaps I just expect too much of Lonely Planet (LP), but it's their own fault. They've stood by me so many times in so many different places in the past that I was beginning to take everything they told me as The Only Advice In Town. So when I arrived in Seville I quickly got into the LP groove and hit La Bella Estrella, a "jazz bar". Well, perhaps I'd arrived the day they buried the proprietor, but there was no jazz going on there, so off I went to Naima Café Jazz, happily only about five doors away down Calle Trajan. I found Guy Hunter-Watts book of the best walks in Andalucia indispensable. Guy's local knowledge of the area and use of both man-made and natural navigation aids makes the routes easy to follow. Additional tips such as where to find a good meal and a bed after a long walk are a valuable addition!

I really enjoyed this fast moving and thoroughly amusing tale. Alex has painted a vivid and fascinating picture of life for a brave but innocent couple buying their first property in Spain. The succession of difficult but hilarious situations and her perception and description of all the colourful characters involved kept me riveted to the end.
