A well researched, intelligent, thorough history of Newgate prison, beautifully presented. As someone who does not read a lot of factual books, I found this an enjoyable read. I got the book after listening to some of the "Book of the Week" episodes on BBC Radio 4. Who knew so much could go on behind a jails four walls, I certainly didn't!

This book is essential reading for any female that has ever experienced the sadness of a break up. The book teaches us that not everything you take for granted is as it seems and there are unexpected twists and turns in the story. Strength, compassion and the ties of family and friends are highlighted in the book which although not intellectually challenging does give us all some food for thought. I read this book in 1 day as I lifted it and literally could not put it down. Every woman should read this book at least once in their life.

This is a good book to choose.

Excellent book at a remarkably low price.

Proven very useful in formulating my investment strategy. You will have read the classic heavy weights, this is much lighter but thoroughly useable.

Mine will probably need replacing because it is so well thumbed!

The usual monotheistic dominance: a single all knowing god. I've spent a lifetime trying to get away from people who want a monotheistic god - who just happens to be what they want him / her to be. I don't mind people wanting this - but Kelly could put that on the cover and I will happily steer clear. But (as usual) the assumption seems to be that everyone will believe and want what Kelly believes. I guess my starting point is to say I have beliefs and it is very unlikely that they will be other people's. I think that mediation / self hypnosis has something to offer people who are different to me. I can respect how they are and what they believe. If only Kelly and Christians were capable of the same.

'Crusaders' is a very ambitious work that opens with an Anglican vicar's attempt to found a church in a deprived area of Tyneside. Politics, religion, and morality form the backdrop to this engrossing novel, heavy themes that are communicated with skill and flair though Kelly's particular ear for realistic dialogue. His characters seem real and the central idea is original and thought-provoking.

However, Kelly does not seem capable of maintaining all the subplots that are woven through the novel. Stories fizzle out and characters simply disappear. This was a stylistic trick of Tolstoy's, and it may be that Kelly was deliberately trying to emulate it. However, it doesn't work, and gives me the impression that he tried to cram too ... This excellent introduction to the Roman Empire is succinct and selective rather than superficial. Its compass ranges from the iconography of the Imperial cult to contemporary perceptions of Rome in the cinema.

Far from being a conventional, political history centred on the Roman elite, Kelly is most impressive when trying to recreate the ordinary lives of the silent and all but invisible majority, who have left no historical trace and only the faintest of impressions in the archaeological record. He is especially interesting and perceptive when writing about elusive topics like population studies within the Empire. Hard evidence on such matters is, naturally, very scant. Kelly uses statistical models and contemporary demographic studies ... Read More:

This too makes a lovely reading book BUT its not easy to use, mixing facts with anacdotes, poetry, quotes from philosophers -slightly jumbled
I found it very frustrating.
Full credit to anyone who spreads the word about this fantastic technique though.
