I am heading off to the India next month to travelling from Mumbai up to Delhi and Rajasthan and thus was looking for a good guide book! I've had the Lonely Planet - India guide for several weeks and it appears excellent and concise and is highly recommended by everyone I speak to. I was also looking for a more specific regional and city guide and thus when I saw this book I thought it would be ideal! However, when it arrived it is simply just the Rajasthan, Delhi and Agra pages lifted from the Lonely Planet - India book! Therefore if you own that, this book is of no use!!

At the same time I ordered the Lonely Planet "Best of Mumbai" and it appears to be an excellent, colourful guide with useful maps. By chance this week I popped ... Read More:

Just come back from a 5 day trip in Rome, with this quide as one of the books used whilst there and found it quite inadequate. I also had a much smaller guide with me, by another publisher, which was of far more use packed with helpful pictures, maps and descriptive passages. The only helpful thing this LP guide had to offer was a larger map of the city which covered the via Appia area where the catacoombs are to the south of the city, but apart from that it was a waste of money.

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...

There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.

Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.

I usually avoid The Lonely Planet guidebooks as I find them getting more & more commercialised as less 'off the beaten track'. Therefore when I used the guide to Portugal I was thrilled at it's content, maps, recommendations & overall informative value. I have since lent this to friends who also have had nothing but praise for it's merit - well done!

Books : Wales (Lonely Planet)
This guide is all you need to experience Wales as it should be. You've got travel information (and do get yourself an ISIC card, if you meet the requirements), you've got places to stay, and of course a description of the main features in Wales, starting obviously from Cardiff, Europe's youngest capital. This guide is especially useful if you have a rather low budget, since many of the hotels, B&Bs, bars and restaurants listed a rather cheap (but not reall low quality, mind you). Recommended.
