An interesting read. However, one piece of sloppy research on Mr Kershaw's part is this rather puzzling title for chapter six. On page 55 Mr Kershaw says that Gerda was "now widely known as 'la Paquena Rubena' (the little red fox)"...

In Spanish, 'little red fox' is actually 'la pequeña zorra roja' or 'la zorrita roja'. I believe that Mr Kershaw got his wires severely crossed somewhere because other publications claim Gerda was affectionately called 'la pequeña rubia' which, in actual fact, means 'the little blonde'. What's more, the word 'zorra' in Spanish, when used to describe a woman, is pejorative sexist slang meaning 'whore' or 'slut'. Somehow, I don't think Gerda was referred to as 'the little red whore' by her many admirers. ... Read More:

"The Few" is Alex Kershaw's work on five Americans who defied their country's neutrality laws to fight in the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Sounds wonderful in summary but unfortunately the book has quite a number of flaws and (as others have already mentioned) inaccuracies. I ordered a copy from the USA as soon as it was published in 2006 as I have more than a passing interest in Billy Fiske (one of the Americans covered in "The Few") and have been collecting information on him for a number of years now. What I found with "The Few", at least with Fiske anyway, was a work which basically just rehashed all the information (both true and false) already published regarding Fiske from other books and magazine articles. There was no sign that the author ... Read More:

Books : Jack London: A Life
I discovered Jack London's name when reading Paul Theroux... seeing this on a bookshelf some years ago, I bought it on impulse - a wonderful tale of an amazing larger than life character, from the days of him as a young seaman in in the Babary Coast days of the early San Francisco waterfront, through his years as a successful writer after Call of the Wild, diverting on to his mad project to build the perfect yacht and sail the pacific again.. to his fading late years when he took other colourful if destitute souls under his wing and gave them room to live for free..

He came to London in his earlier years and saw the abject poverty of the city of a century ago - which led him to write People of the Abyss.

Highly recommend this ... Read More:

This is quite a sad book portraying the loss of one small American town during the D-day landings at Omaha beach, which resulted in so much slaughter. The memorable opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, which portrayed the appalling scenario on Omaha Beach, was loosely based on Kershaw's story. The first wave of seasick young GIs that landed on that fateful beach were mown down by the waiting machine gunners and torn apart by the devestating shell fire. The dead lay there in their hundreds, bodies and dissected limbs of the fallen was strewn all over the beach like flotsam and the water turned red with their blood. Omaha was finally taken but at a terribly high cost and the cost to Company A who were in the first wave of landings was higher than most. A company ... Read More:

Books : Blood and Champagne: The Life and Times of Robert Capa
The most wonderful account of a photographer's life I have ever read. The pictures and the life come alive on every page. But not just a life, a great story too. This author knows how to write non fiction and make it superbly fascinating. The best book I've read in years - deeply moving, and a roller-coaster of a ride.

Books : The Longest Winter: The Epic Story of World War II's Most Decorated Platoon
"The Longest Winter" is largely a collection of well organized anecdotes from the men of the 99th Division, particularly a platoon of eighteen men who performed one of the most important small unit actions of World War II.

Composed of regular inductees, men from the discontinued ASTP program and "90 Day Wonders", the 99th was organized in the U.S. before being shipped to Europe where it was situated right in the path of the Battle of the Bulge. Most of the story is told through the eyes of the men of the 99th, although actions of the Germans and some civilians are also included. Much of the book relates the hardships of the platoon which was taken as POWs.

Although not recognized at the time, the platoon on which this book focuses played a pivotal ... Read More:
