This is a great book if you want a snappy, concise response to Dawkin's book. If you want a detailed blow by blow account, you may want to look elsewhere, this book is only 65 pages.

McGrath seeks to pick on the main issues and flaws. While praising some of Dawkin's earlier work, he explains why he thinks this book is not of the same calibre, lacks the same academic rigour and to quote the words of Prospect Magazine "incurious, dogmatic, rambling, and self contradictory book".

McGrath sets out to assess the reliabilty of Dawkin's critique, this is his total aim. In this he is successful, as he succinctly explains why.

a book entitled "Christian Theology" has a moral duty to cover not only Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, but also the Orthodox - both Eastern and Oriental. While this book gives a good introduction to the first two, there is almost complete lack of coverage of the third, which is most unwarranted and unfortunate, considering the spiritual wealth and contributions of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox theologians to Christianity. This book would be of very limited use to anyone interested in Christianity as it is understood and practiced by the Orthodox. Perhaps it should have been entitled "Western Christian Theology".

I fully agree with the previous reviewer who gave 1 star. Thoroughly deserving I feel. I also enjoyed J.Knight's comment "Dawkins doesn't need to study astrology to know that the suggestion that the motion of heavenly bodies millions of miles away affects the details of our lives is absurd.". I would suggest that J.Kinght doesn't understand what the requisites of absudity are; at least heavenly bodies are based in reality... bearded bloke in the sky is not (maybe he uses the planets and stars when he's on holiday... you can keep that one for your next debate) ;)

This book was just what I was looking for. I wanted a good summary of Christian theology for the last two thousand years, so that I could make up my own mind about various questions. I didn't want anyone to feed me answers, but I did want someone to set out the options, and let me read representatives of each position. And this is exactly what this book did. McGrath provides more than three hundred extracts from leading Christian writers from all traditions, arranged under ten broad topical headings "God", "Christ", "Salvation", and so on. In every case, he provides a brilliant introduction to the reading, followed by comment. By the end of this, I felt as if I was some kind of genius. I had actually understood what this was all about! This is a great, ... Read More:

McGrath takes the prize for expecting his readers to simply take his word for things. He repeatedly asserts that atheism is declining worldwide. Is he right? No way to tell. Not once does he quote a statistic or survey to that effect. Similarly, he decries current atheist philosophy as 'bankrupt' - without bothering to quote, let alone critique, such philosophy. Aside from a few easily-dismissed pot-shots at Richard Dawkins, he doesn't engage with late-20th or 21st-century atheist thinking at all. He'd much rather talk about the Soviet Union. No surprise that he can't seem to produce a single present-day atheist who doesn't deplore such brutal suppression of religion.

He does also mention Philip Pullman's 'Dark Materials' trilogy - but I hardly think a brief ... Read More:

McGrath has made an important and provocative contribution to the understanding of the nature and potential of Protestantism, in its widest sense. He weaves a fulsome tale of history and theology, integrating disparate characters from across nearly 500 years with ample references to further resources. Importantly, he is bang up to date and includes sufficient material on areas of the church that academic readers may know less about. I am full of admiration for the overall quality of writing that combines a high level of inclusive critical reflection with a sufficiently engaging story telling style that kept me towards the front of my seat. I knew I needed to read this book, and to study it carefully; it turned out to be a delight. I would like to have seen more quotations to support ... Read More:

I got this book as a birthday gift. I already had McGrath's superlative Introduction To Theology textbook. This is a primer for that bigger more expansive book.

"The Basics" takes the Apostle's Creed as its structure and works through the key areas of Christian theology. Faith, God, Creation, Jesus, Salvation, Trinity, Church and Heaven all get their own chapters and once you have read them you will be more than able to start reading some theology texts and enjoy them. It also has, typically for McGrath, a great set of reference appendices at the end that include a glossary of theological terms, the cited theologians and advice on what to do now that you realise theology is brilliant and interesting and relevant!

McGrath writes so well. I love the way he breaks ... Read More:
