Found the book a very handy reference for the journey - interesting and well written, with a good deal of practical detail, great value recommendations. Excellent coverage of both cities and more remote areas. The author's own fascination with the country is very contagious. Highly recommended.

This is a handy little city guide, small enough to fit in a bag or large pocket, and not too heavy. I found the maps at the back particularly useful; easy to follow and covering a wider area than those in other guidebooks I looked at. The tube map is also welcome.

The information is divided up into categories, which are then further subdivided by area. This is a departure from the more commonly seen guidebook format of dividing into areas and then into categories. It works quite well though - when you're sightseeing, you don't want lists of hotels intervening. It helps find the information you need surprisingly quickly. The only disadvantage is working out which 'barrio' (neighbourhood) you need to look in, which can be hard when ... Read More:

A comprehensive guide yet again from Lonely Planet which includes all the essential information for a holiday in Mediterranean Europe. Sadly it doesn't cover Bosnia Herzegovina (despite the map on the back cover suggesting it does) but all in all the information is as much as you could hope for - accommodation, and the basic attractions in all the countries, as well as suggested itineraries.

This book only sets out to provide a basis for those travelling around the region, although it provides sufficient detail for those spending a while in any of the countries covered. It is a book to be supplemented if you are spending a long time in any of the countries, although once in country it's easy enough to pick up the necessary information from ... Read More:

As usual the lonely planet West Africa is full of details, which enable a traveller to travel around West Africa, ranging from the best hotels in small towns to bus schedules. From the fertile coast to the sandy deserts it provides a good but brief overview of the nature, history and present sights. The only weak point is the limited amount of information on regional cultural differences or history, which is probably caused by the number of countries covered

The first edition was rather better. It was better laid out and easier to read. The typeface in the new edition is smaller, the maps are smaller, and my subjective impression is that material on the main sites, Leptis and Sabratha, is less extensive than it was. Frankly it should be rather more extensive! Otherwise it is reasonably up to the standard of most such guides, although I concur with the reviewer who said that it's erroneous in parts.

My first impression was that the author had been 'got at' by the Libyan authorities. I particularly noticed the omission of comments about hotels that would throw you out of your room unless you agreed to buy their foul-tasting evening meals have gone, for instance; or mention of sleepy officials ... I am planning a trip to Algeria in the next few months and was pleased to see that Lonely planet had at last produced a comprehensive guide to the country. For me it is concise and very readable but better than that I gave it to my Algerian boyfriend who read it from cover to cover. He confirms that the books is interesting and accurate.

The book covers not only tourist trails but the history of the country including the tragic war with France, the food and art. This is the essential book for travel to this part of the world - indeed I believe it is the only book.
