If anyone is an atheist like me and have read all the usual books like the God Delusion and fancy something else strong but pallatable: this is the book for you. It is written as an amusingly jocular and light-hearted piss-take of Christianity. He says what we're all thinking - that no one in history has abided by all the 10 commandments. He has his own equilavent of the commandments and beleives most animals are better and less corrupt than humans. As a vegetarian, this seems quite true. Sers, its defo worth reading if just to see the look on the faces of commuters sitting across from you on the train! It's only cheap - buy it!

Do not approach The Devils Notebook expecting an occult tome with great Satanic insight for it will only disappoint you. I actually love LaVeys writing style in this book but it takes a great deal of reading with a large pinch of salt. It is simply a collection of observances by the deceased Satanist which if you read with an open heart allows a great deal of the unique flavour of the left-hand path to flood in. I'd recommend to any free thinker but for those with a deeper esoteric bent then I'd steer you towards LaVeys 'Satan Speaks' as the better colection of essays.

Anton LaVey totally let's go of any self criticism and offers sixty highly personal ramblings about things and stuff that bugs him with the "ordinary people's" world. Having said that, and being a big fan of LaVey and what he stands for, I nonetheless recommend this book to all and everybody. Many of the essays have wit and every one has attitude. But this is probably not the best introduction to LaVey or modern satanism.

Being a fan of LaVey's writings, I found this biography great fun to read. He was obviously an intelligent and learned man, but never forget, dear readers, he was a carny hand years before he founded the Church Of Satan. As long as you realise that his Satanism was really just satire of religious hypocrites and a bit of titilation thrown in for fun, you'll get a lot from this book! Just don't beleive a word of it!
