I had known of this book for about a year when i finally decided to buy it. I was put off by the slightly dodgy artwork and the very serious nature of the plot which to me is not what comics are about. Anyway,I wanted to read it so i could come on hear and rant about how it is an over-rated waste of time but I cant. The art isnt perfect i agree but it has its charms and as you read the story you really do get into the simplistic nature of it,it works for this,it doesnt distract from the story which over stylised art would. The story is VERY well written and everything i read totally shocked and moved me.
The jist of my review is - if you are put off by the art but you liked schindlers list or have a fascination with hearing about the holocaust ... Read More:

2.In the Shadow of No Towers by: Art Spiegelman

Books : In the Shadow of No Towers
This book is very large and quite thick, but since it's been blown up to a huge size and printed on the sort of thick card teething toddler's books are made from, it actually contains very little. The whole thing is completely over produced. Had this been a slim A5 pamphlet costing two or three quid I'd have no complaints, but for it's price and the space it takes up, I think this is very poor value. Mr Spiegelman ruminates briefly on his very tangential experience of 9/11. For such a bulky book and such a weighty subject, this is flimsy lightweight stuff. Do not buy unless you've had a chance to flick through it first.

Over the years I have read many books centred or reflecting upon holocaust atrocities and I had thought the power to shock would have dimmed. Maus took me by surprise with the depth of sickening revulsion I felt at the horrors which beset Spiegelman's family of Polish Jews. I attribute that to the medium, with the graphic portrayal of events leading to a much quicker and more immediate sense of the unimaginably awful conditions.

As with other such memoirs, there is, however, a strain of hope and plenty triumphs for the embattled human spirits encountered between the pages; and the author's depiction of his own Father (heroic in his resistance to the Nazi onslaught but very difficult to live with in later life) could hardly be termed sentimental. These elements ... Read More:

Books : Maus: And Here My Troubles Began Pt. 2: A Survivor's Tale: And Here My Troubles Began Pt. 2 (Penguin Graphic Fiction)
This is probably the most moving and touching book I have read and I implore anyone and everyone to read it. You will laugh and cry, sometimes in the space of a few pages, not many books have that effect on an reader! Spiegleman has created a masterpiece that fully desreves the many accolades that it has garnered over the years both individually and with it's predecessor, My Father Bleeds History. Possibly the most definative, and human account in any form of the nature and also the effects of the holocaust. The authors use of animals serves further to heuighten the readers guilt that as a race we allowed something like this to happen..the animlas highlight just how we all, not just like the germans behaved over the jewish situation and we continue to behave all over the world ... The first book of Auster's New York trilogy was originally published in 1985, and in 1994 was adapted into this graphic novel. I've never read the original (or any of the other parts of the trilogy), so I can't comment on Karasik and Mazzicchelli's adaptation. However, I can say that since I'm not particularly fond of existentialist or postmodernist literature (those two terms being the most common critical shorthand for Auster's story), this really didn't do anything for me at all. The story is basically an exercise in metafiction, and if you like that stuff, great -- I do not. It is dressed up (at least initially) in the mystery genre, but that's just window dressing. (There's a long legacy, especially in France, of cloaking novels and films of ideas in genre trappings (for example ... Read More:

Unfortunately like a lot of things in this world, the book relies on a gimmick. Ok, so the book is a dog. It has a lead atached to the spine. It wants to be read. Great. Second time it's ok. Third time it's dull. Fourth and subsequent time it's tedious. Not enough content to allow re-reading (and what else do you do with children's books) I suspect also that my daughter (aged 4) will forget about this book when she hits 5. The age range if more 3-5, I think. No way a 7-year-old would be interested, unless they've led a sheltered life.

10.Jack Cole and Plastic Man: Forms Stretched to Their Limits by: Art Spiegelman, Chip Kidd

Books : Jack Cole and Plastic Man: Forms Stretched to Their Limits
This biography/retrospective of cartoonist Jack Cole is certainly eye-catching with its chaotic design, popping full-bleed artwork, rounded corners, and varying paper stock, but as a portrait of the artist it never really amounts to more than a draft sketch. Spiegelman's text is slightly expanded from an article he wrote in 1999 for The New Yorker, and while it's a fairly decent biographical sketch of Cole's life and career as creator of Plastic Man, Playboy illustrator, and syndicated cartoonist, it never does more than skim the surface. Most indicative of this is the skimpy treatment Cole's unexpected and unexplained suicide is accorded. It's clear that Spiegelman (creator of the acclaimed Maus) loves Cole's work, but other than some generic plaudits that could apply to a number of cartoonists, it's ... Read More:
