Having seen the cartoon film as a child and then the live action I and loving them both I thought as an adult I should now read the book and its brilliant. It has elememts that are not transferable to the screen and even knowing the story inside out I was still excited by it. It was slightly embarrasing reading a book on the tube with pictures in it but I can assure you this book is worth any amount of embarresment. One of the greatest books of all time!

This book is the citizens arrest of Christianity. Logical, well written and dangerous. You really can't read it without coming to a decision of whether to agree with his conclusions or not.

CS Lewis, like the desert Fathers (portrayed by John Cassian in his Conferences and Institutes) has a keen insight into the psychological and spiritual forces operable in the human psyche. Listen to what Screwtape "writes" when advising his tempter nephew on how to deal with the newly converted christian:

"I have been writing on the assumption that the people in the next pew afford no rational grounds for disappointment. Of course, if they do - if the patient knows that the woman with the absurd hat is a fanatical bridge player or the man with the squeeky boots a miser and an extortioner - then your task is so much easier...At the present stage, you see, he has an idea of "Christians" in his mind which he supposes to be spiritual but which, ... CS Lewis looks death into the face; he does not flinch and does not console himself with platitudes. He had lost the love of his life and his pain is palpable to the reader. This is a raw and honest book but it is not at all depressing: At the end of the book, Lewis begins to recover: his wish is simply that, on his own death bed, his lover will come back to him and give him the consolation of seeing her face again.

C.S. Lewis is without doubt one of the greatest - if not the greatest - lay theologian of the 20th century. Immensely personal, his works do not fail to speak to whoever takes time to read and reflect on the great and eternal questions humans have been asking since time immemorial. Reading this book from cover to cover has been a truly spiritual journey - absolutely rewarding but difficult and challenging as well. Nowhere in his works will you find mindless zeal of the self-righteous, instead what shines from every page is a candid and life-long search for truth by a highly intelligent, highly educated and decent man not afraid of asking difficult questions about his faith and reasons. A committed Anglican himself, C.S.Lewis must be a mandatory reading for all Christians regardless ... Read More:

Well , what can i say ? It is one of the best books I ever read as a child . It grasps the childs imagination by taking these four brothers and sisters into the magical land of Narnia where anything can happen. It is designed for early teenagers alough I read it when I was twelve and I read it for 10 hours on a sunday afternoon from the begginning to the end. C.S Lewis described the characters very well like Edmund was very selfish and how Lucy was so kind hearted . It also describes brillantly how no body believed Lucy about her going into Narnia . Anyway I will not give away too much in case you don't want to know what happens. Unfortunately C.S Lewis died after having a long and sucessful career on the 22nd of November 1963 and I have the upmost respect for him being born ... Read More:

I was informed, by reviews of the book, that this would chart his conversion from atheism to Christianity. I was, instead, surprised to read a good autobiography about him, with a great deal of reference to what Lewis calls 'stabs of Joy'. The the last few pages chronicled in lightning speed how he went from atheism, to theism, and then to believing that Christ was the son of God. I'd have liked to read more about his philosophical musings on why Christianity is a valid, and true religion. But nevertheless, it was an entertaining read, and provided a good sight into Lewis' character.

Books : The Chronicles of Narnia
It is a number of years ago since I picked these books up and find myself coming back to review them now following a request from a fellow friend and writer to review his own children's fantasy book.

Having grown up with the BBCs mechanical lion I was so very eager to know the beginning, (though yes Tolkien did do better his Silmarillion but then this is not a book most adults are going to give their children).

I found the chronicles easy going and very rewarding, right up to the penultimate. This delight was clearly born out of the Lewis' unquestionable talent. Unfortunately, this talent I later discovered to be the downfall by the final book of the chronicles, an anti-climax. For this truly, madly (madly?), deeply beliefs in the end would have been better read ... Read More:

Lewis deals with a timeless issue in this book: why is there suffering and pain? In the UK, this issue has come centre stage in moral debates. Should a being being permitted to exist if its life is destined to be one of "useless" suffering.

There was an article in the paper about a year ago about a couple who had a child with cystic fibrosis and wanted through IVF to conceive a child free of this nasty disease. Through the "miracle" of science, they were enabled to screen out any embryos with the disease so that they could have a "perfect" child. The logic for this was, so they said: "why would anyone want anyone to suffer" (aside: what would their existing child with CF be now thinking: it would have been better that I had not existed?) as if all who suffer, would wish not to be rather ...
