Just returned from touring southern Ireland and I found the Lonely Planet guide priceless as it gives great detail for all the attractions in Ireland. I would have missed a number of must see attractions without this book! Another guide which was much dearer (and shall remain nameless)was very poor in comparison.

I usually avoid The Lonely Planet guidebooks as I find them getting more & more commercialised as less 'off the beaten track'. Therefore when I used the guide to Portugal I was thrilled at it's content, maps, recommendations & overall informative value. I have since lent this to friends who also have had nothing but praise for it's merit - well done!

Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). Disappointing when compared to the Lonely Planet Guide to Bolivia where I have also lived (that guide was excellent and warrants 5*). Has all the main tourist attractions but misses out on some of the smaller places which are essential for anyone here for a longer time and looking for places to visit outside Lima which you can get to in a weekend. That said, I haven't read all the other guides so others may be similiar in content.
