Lonely Planet - great for maps and local transport but thats about all! As any experienced traveller will tell you, the minute any restaurant, cafe or hotel gets it name in LP then its prices will double and the standards will half! I also agree with some of the other comments here, why do they try so hard to be cool and why do they tell us what we should and shouldnt do? An OK book but now and then leave it in your backpack and be adventurous.

The Lonely Planet books are very useful for all budgets, covering backpackers to those who like to splash their cash. This book covers all the Thai islands and coastal areas, as well as an extensive section on Bangkok. It includes details of transportation between all the different areas which is really handy if you are making your own way around Thailand, and there are tips on scams to avoid etc. It also includes the usual information of accommodation, eating options, things to do etc. I would highly recommend getting this book if you are planning to travel around Thailand as it will be an invaluable source of information.

It has been since December 2005, that I have visited this busy and buzzing city of Bangkok. I needed a nice and easy guide which would pinpoint all the main attractions of Bangkok and the Lonely Planet offers me all the answers I needed to make the best out of my journey in Bangkok. It is a handy guide to have. Bangkok (Lonely Planet) is a short and useful guide, complimented with pictures and brief text about particular attractions of Bangkok. It details all the hotels, restaurants, bars, museums and shops available in Bangkok. What more do you want? This book is beautiful. It really brings back memories of my overland trip around Asia and covers everything from the food to the music to the people. The pictures are fantastic and cover everything from beautiful scenery to the local people. I cannot recommend this enough - if you have travelled around Asia then it's a must buy.

Whilst LP guides are generally of a high standard compared to most guide books I think it is fair to say that the quality of information varies considerably between different LP guides. It is a real shame as Bangkok is such a fascinating city but in my view the LP Bangkok guide falls towards the lower end of the scale. Essentially the book seems to consist of taking the Bangkok section and the general info parts of the LP Thailand Guide book, making the maps more colourful and then wrapping them in a 'Bangkok guide' cover - it really doesn't seem to add anything more than the country guide would give you. I found the 'Let's Go' guides to SE Asia way superior to the 'Lonely Planet'. The trouble with the 'LP' is that it tends to keep you on the well trodden trail and advises you to be cautious at every step. The whole idea of travelling or backpacking is, I feel, to experience something new. You need to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. I think the opinions and tips in the 'LP' advise too much on what not to do and what nasties may happen if you do. If you like to stay with the herd following the beaten track then this is the book for you. However, if it's a bit of adventure you're after then I'd look elsewhere.
