A book describing the development of the railways in the UK, mostly concentrating on the early times, but with a few trailing chapters on the post WW2 modern developments into the familiar modern rail system. This doesn't talk much about the underground, which Wolmar covers in The Subterranean Railway, but instead covers the early freight and passenger lines. He makes a deliberate effort to avoid covering most of the technology and instead describes the formation of the early railway companies and the social changes the railways caused as they spread through Britain. Really quite interesting.

Christian Wolmar is a journalist who happens to have an interest in trains and this is one of many books he has written on the subject over the last 10 years.
Subterranean Railway focuses on the London Underground and how it grew to what we travel on today in our millions year on year.
Now personally I can just about tolerate the Underground in off peak times but when it comes to the peak hours it has to been one of the worse traveling experiences known to man or woman.
So with that in mind this book made me sit up and take notice of what a great feat on engineering the London Underground really is and still remains, the photo of Piccadilly Circus in chapter thirteen illustrates this point very well indeed.

This really an excellent book. It in detail examines the results of British Rail privatization in a way that anyone can grasp (even me who before I picked up this book wouldn't have know what a ROSCO was even if it ran over me). It avoids the fat cat cliches. He goes into to detail to explain how privatization was at the root of the big post-privatization disasters but explains that the root cause was not greed but the confusion wrought by splitting the system up into small fragments. An he stresses that rail which has in any case been vastly safer way to travel than say car has been getting safer still despite the headline hitting crashes that have bucked the trend.

He then focuses on what he sees as the real problem. The current ... Read More:

Books : The Great British Railway Disaster
Britain was rather quick with railway privatising. Rail experts predicted problems, and here they are: The 'Independent on Sunday' ran a regular column on all those bigger and smaller catastrophes that have struck the nations rails since. This book has collected them, and they make excellent reading. My reactions varied from hilarious laughter over outright astonishment to just plain rage and anger. I learned how to ruin a working concern, and, as I live in Germany, I found out what we can expect, here. Deserves a huge readership.
