When you pick up a book by Christopher Lloyd you get quality. Whatever he says about a plant you know that he knows this because he has grown it himself. His recommendations and non- are based on years of expertise. As well as that his books ooze personality. He has strong views on many things, not least the 'taste police' and advocates gardening to please only oneself. He is famous for his use of colour and for upsetting the 'establishment', and a great sense of fun and mischief comes through the pages. Inspirational.
This book is set out following the calendar year and I make notes as I go along - there is so much information.
He has never disappointed.

Very practical ideas for intensively using space for successive waves of flower-power. Yes, his garden was enormous, but the technique transfers eficaciously to small areas. This is a highly practical book, despite the wonderfully distracting photography. I garden in North Eastern Spain (continental climate, not Mediterranean, where the problems of hardiness and drought-resistance are combined. Many of the combinations or types of plants in this book i already have established, evidence that this is not a book only relevant to Sussex. If you spend 5 years only buying and trying hardy perennials, you will eventually find you have a solid basis of all round colour, on which to play with subsequently! My soil is clay with only home-made compost ... Read More:

Christopher Lloyd was a passionate gardener with much practical experience from running his own extensive gardens at Great Dixter, Sussex. This book with over thirty sections under six main headings covers almost every aspect of gardening in a fresh and questioning manner, often dispelling long held opinions.

In addition the book is illustrated with many of the author's own photographs (1973 edition). It also has a glossary and substantial index.

Christopher Lloyd's writing is outspoken, opinionated, witty, entertaining, authoritative, practical, informative, one could go on, but above all it is a sheer pleasure to read. Without doubt Christopher Lloyd was one of the greatest garden writers, and this book must rank ... Read More:

I bought this book because I had enjoyed Lloyd's "Succession Planting for Adventurous Gardeners". It was a slight disappointment, mainly because Lloyd concentrates on his favourite colours, orange, scarlet, and yellow. Nothing is sayed on blue and only little (but nothing new) on white. Combinations of purple and scarlet, orange and magenta are too shocking for most gardeners.
Pictures are of a very high quality, but some of them have already been published in the "Succession Planting". The missing information on cool colours and combinations is partly compensated by beautiful pictures.

I've heard about this book at the GARDEN BLOGGER'S BOOK CLUB.

This is a collection of letters between two english gardener friends, Beth Chatto and Christopher Lloyd in a period of two years (1996-97).

I loved the book. Didn't know any of the authors, their gardens or their written work. I loved to 'meet' them in this book. I was sorry to know that Christopher Lloyd passed away a few years ago but I would love to visit his garden, still open to public. From the two authors, Christo looked the most fascinating character.

It's a very british book. Funny and entertaining. Definetly to gardening lovers.

The only negative thing I have to say was about knowing, at the end, that the letters were written ... Read More:

This is a very handsome book, and what it lacks in substance and wit from the absence of Christopher Lloyd in many of the sections, it makes up with Jonathan Buckley's wonderful photography and the occasional radical insight. It's not a terribly cohesive book due to the number of contributors and some of the subjects covered, but Lloyd's sections and those by Roy Lancaster and Helen Dillon are sage and full of their enthusiasm for a different kind of planting. I can't say that this is a book for the truly adventurous garden, as such a gardener is well beyond the plants suggested in this book, and some of the advice on hardiness of certain plants is as woefully cautious and unadventurous as the advice given in RHS tomes. Quibbles aside, it is a nice ... Read More:

There are many other books that probably do this better, cooking from what you grow, but where this excels is in the life and opinions of Lloyd himself. His daschund 'Dahlia' eating the rising bread dough and uncomfortably rising herself, his dismissal of people who say cucumbers are difficult to digest and his relaxed approach, not all the jobs that should be done in the garden or kitchen do get done. Sometimes it is forgetfulness, but sometimes he just can't be bothered! A great addition to any gardener or cooks' bookshelf.
