Despite the inferior quality of the photo reproduction I've always thought that Rough Guide is better value than Lonely Planet. It is generally more informative, more erudite, and the style is arguably geared to a wider readership, while LP leans more towards backpackers and gap-year students. I also think LP is more prone to hyperbole while Rough Guide is normally unflinchingly honest about places. It's perceived negativity is for me a bonus as it is often better to travel with lower or at least realistic expectations. As it says in the opening gambit, many travellers head for India expecting to 'encounter a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to find one of the most materialistic societies on the planet'. I think this is pretty spot ... Read More:

OK, I love Rough Guides and always have done. But even allowing for this obvious bias this really is a superb book.

All of the usual information is there; the best places to see & do; how to get around by public & private transport; maps of major towns/cities; a v useful guide to (delicious) Keralan food & drink; local customs etc. You would expect this from a guide book, of course, but Rough Guides does this better than anyone else, and 'Kerala' is no exception.

The excellent 'Contexts' section, which fills in the history of this unique, fascinating, beautiful Indian state; and the feature 'text boxes' of a particular aspect of Keralan culture allow for a good understanding of the state, essential when you've passed ... Read More:

I'd bought my flight tickets, travel insurance and the all important Visa for entering India. Next on the list was the guide book. It was a choice of this one or the Lonely Planet guide book.

Both were published around the same time, and I've used both before for different countries, so I'm happy with their layout and content. However, choosing the right guide this time seemed far more difficult.

Both contained detailed information about the places I plan to visit. However, I found some bits were present in one book, but not the other, and vice-versa. In the end I decided to go for both books. I'm travelling in South India for 3 months, so I thought it would be worth the luxury of having two guides.

The main thesis of this book is that the alphabet, or rather, the adaptation of the hebrew alphabet that the greeks effected, is to blame for our current state of separation from nature.
However, the real joy about reading the fundamentation of such claim is that David Abram manages to drag you into the animistic view of the world.
The way he describes his own experiences is highly poetic. Anyone who has travelled to asia knows what it feels like to be there and the difficulties of comming back to the western society.
When he analyses indigenous concepts and practices, you can't help immersing yourself in the forgotten magick of the sensuous landscape.
This natural form of awareness, according to Abram, could be the solution to the ecological ... Read More:

What, no review yet for this gem, this Koh i Noor that shines in the so often bland and overhyped landscape of travel guides? I'm a guidebook writer myself and know scribes who had the unfortunate task of putting together a competing tome to Rough Guide's Corsica, and were plumb overwhelmed by the task. This book has all the insight, detail, and enthusiasm to carry any intelligent visitor through a rewarding visit to Corsica. And culture culture culture. All exceptionally well written, with no resort-led PR fluff.

Books : The Rough Guide to Goa
I studied the guide before our holiday but read it from cover to cover whilst we were there. We really would have been lost without it, in fact there were tears and tantrums when I thought I had left it in a bar ! The reviews of the restaurants were extremely accurate and from the guide we discovered many of the Goa's beautiful restaurants which we would never have found otherwise. The reviews on temples was also extremely useful and explained in great detail what you would find around the temple areas and also inside the temples.
We found that even though we were not in Goa as 'backpackers', it still covered many more superior places and not just the beach huts bars (that are still wonderful!)
The only thing I would disagree with would be the review about the famous ... Read More:

QUICK INFORMATION

The Rough Guide to Goa is firstly what it says it is - A guide. It has been put together to help and advise you with resourceful information for your forth-coming travels. This guide I would say would be exceptional for backpackers and holiday makers travelling only in Goa. If you are looking to travel other places in India please look to a more suitable book to cover your whole scope.

When purchasing and selecting any travel books always look to see when the book was printed, this edition that I am reviewing is the 6th edition printed January 2006 this would be the most recent and up to date book in the Rough Guide to Goa series. Even though this book is a year old it still supplied me with all the information I needed books in this ... Read More:

This a wonderful book. It is not a book for mathematicians, it is a book for anyone at the sharp end of analysing clinical trial data, health technology intervention data or assimilating evidence for an evidence-based approach to policy. It takes the reader through enough of the details of Bayesian theory to be able to understand the issues and see the advantages and disadvantages of the Bayesian approach compared to the classical alternatives. A very useful, hands-on book that should be on every practitioner's bookshelf. Highly recommended.
