I can't imagine why anyone would not have liked this book, I found that it made me absolutely LONG to be in Italy, and was so very evocative and beautifully written. I am not a cook, so the recipes went over my head somewhat, but I must admit that they did titillate my tastebuds. It made me want to read so much more and I was sad to come to the end.

A return to the author's senses-filled life in Tuscany. As wonderfully evocative as its predecessor. I think some of the reviews here are missing the point - this is clearly written with the intention of being a fairly lightweight, but sensually stimulating memoir, not a deep investigation into Tuscan or Italian society.

In my opinion, the previous reviews are a little harsh. I loved Mrs Mayes' books "Under the Tuscan Sun" and "Bella Tuscany" and couldn't wait to read about her travels further afield. I wasn't disappointed.

Mayes and her husband Ed pack their bags for a series of holidays, including Portugal, Spain, France, England, Scotland, Turkey, Greece and various Italian destinations. What we are reading is her personal travel diary. She often makes references to writers who lived and worked where she visits, and I think that sometimes she chooses her destinations on this basis. This is something I see has been criticized in some Amazon reviews, but Mrs Mayes is a writer and a professor of creative writing, it makes sense she would want to make ... Read More:

I bought the book expecting to read some great ideas about how to bring a bit of Tuscany into my own home. Unfortunately that was not the case. The title of the book is very misleading as there is very little in it about "bringing Tuscany home" in fact there is practically no useful information on this subject. Having said that I did read it all because I love Tuscany and all things Tuscan so I did make the effort to finish the book. In the end it was an okay read, it just didn't fulfill its title.

Books : Shrines: Images of Italian Worship
A very simple yet wonderful book. I have spent a large portion of my life in Italy and I remember as a child finding the shrines dotted across the landscape normal.....It wasn't until I was older that I appreciated them for what they were and started to pay more attention to them and what they meant for the people who had them constructed and for the villages they were in. This book gives you a sampling of what it's like to drive through /walk around any part of Italy. Read the book and if you get the chance, when you're in Italy take a good look around and see for yourself.

Some quite nice photography, some good recipes and some very pleasant insights and memoirs did not add up to the sum of its parts for me.
I felt this was like an advert for the businesses in and around Cortona but it's probably still worth purchasing if you are a Tuscan addict! Certainly I commend you to stay in this area and I know you will love Ricardo and Silvia Barcacchi's "Il Falconiere" if not to stay in then at least try out the resurant. Here you can experience Slow Food at it's finest.
If you are a keen cook then Elizabeth Romer's "Tuscan Year " might suit you better but if you want to learn more about the area then make sure you read at least "Under the Tuscan Sun".
If you just want to read then I recommend "Swan" by the same author.
