Stedman's trekking guide to Kilimanjaro really is a gem of a guide. It provides just about all the information you might need to help you conquer Africa's great white peak. A mine of practical information that will help take you from planning your trip to the summit and which you will probably find you take with you on your way up the mountain.Certainly when I turned Kilimanjaro into Kili half the party I was with had a copy of this book with them! Henry Stedman covers his subject very methodically taking you from the early planning of which tour companies to use or if you arrange your trek on arrival which trekking agencies to use. We've been coming to the Dolomites (to visit relatives) for years and have always found this book by some distance the most useful, with contact information for all the refuges, as well as some precise trail descriptions and great maps. Although we've only used it for some of their short walks so far, we're hoping to start on the AV1 this summer and again, while planning, find this book just invaluable! Great stuff!!!

I would recommend taking with you this book, which has detailed descriptions, and gives the name and phone number of every place to eat, drink and stay along the way, and also the official National Trail guide (by Burton), which is particularly good for its OS maps. A perfect book would combine these features. On the walk itself, the first day (through central Newcastle), and the last two days (through Carlisle and to the sea) - were not the best bits: no visible Wall at all, and only the occasional sign of its accompanying earthworks. If you plan to do it, but don't want to do the whole lot, you'll probably want to do the best bit, and this, without any doubt, is the central section: lots of visible Wall and lots of scenic ...
