Books : Uncle (New York Review Children's Collection)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it in the library many years ago and found myself drawn completely into it. Never mind the snobbery and slighltly bullying manner of Uncle (an extremely rich elephant with a BA who wears a purple dressing-gown), the surreal imagery is fantastic. Uncle's generosity is touching, especially as regards the Badfort crew whom are invited in for Christmas and to use Uncle's swimming pool (with the best water-slide in the world!).

I searched for years for this in bookshops and was delighted to see it re-released last year. I recommend everyone to read this book at least once; the magic will stay with you.

This hardback reissue is of the same high standard as the New York Review's previous reprint of Uncle - it's a facsimile of the original first edition, as far as I can tell, and really does full justice to Quentin Blake's illustrations.

It goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of this magical series of books about Uncle, the millionaire elephant and his slightly surreal castle of Homeward, and his constant battles with Beaver Hateman and the rest of his nefarious gang at Badfort. Now, thanks to these reissues, my daughter is enjoying them too.

For those unfamiliar with the series, the first two books have had a couple of reissues (in paperback) before, but these New York Review versions are far superior. However, ... Read More:
